Goofynina and Epoman - Gone But Not Forgotten

WWW
« on: August 06, 2006, 02:00:55 AM »

Amber_79 was discussing the possibility of putting together some recipes that renal patients and others could use.  I told her about the cookbook publishing company, found at www.cookbookpublishers.com.  It is a great idea for any organization and can even be a fundraiser.  I have two cookbooks done by them.  One, a US credit union way back in 1989, and another, the ladies of the Catholic church here when they were raising building funds(just about two years ago).
Amber, I hope we can do something about it.

I think a Dialysis Cookbook would be great! I would by it! Maybe have sections in it by health type.

Can that publishing website be used by other countries? Im in Australia. I had a quick look, do you have to pay for your books up front or do they get a percentage of what you sell them for? I would love to compile a book on nice things that Dx patients CAN eat! I have alot of recipes piled up, not all suitable but probly can be adapted.

It was used in the British Virgin Islands - that is where the catholic church was that did one.  The difference would be the shipping.  Anyway, we could always get someone from the States to be responsible for it to make mailing, etc. easier.
You pay up front according to how many recipes the book should have, and how many copies you want.  Then it is up to you to sell the cookbooks and recoup the money.
According to this page - http://www.cookbookpublishers.com/pricingAndProfits/priceChart.cfm -
For 200 cookbooks with up to 150 recipes, you pay $570.  If the cookbooks are sold at $10 each, that would be $2000.  Profit would be $1430.   If you sell them for $5, that would be $1000 and the profit would be $430.  I think I did the maths correctly.

My mother would have been 100 years old in Feb 2008, and my family is thinking of getting one out by that time as a memorial to her.

But I thought it would be a joint venture.  You wouldn't have to find that yourself.  At least, that is what I was thinking.  If people put up a certain amount, then they get a certain number of books which they can then sell and get back their investment, and even make a profit.
if we get ten people willing to do this - we each invest $57.00.  When the books are published, we each get 20 books.  If we sell them at $10, we make $200.  We would only need to sell 6 of them each to make back our initial investment.  We could even sell some through the website (with Epoman's permission, of course).
Let's think about it.

Maybe even if someone makes a page where you have a paypal account set up and people just click it to donate money ... just an idea

like:

"Venture to put out a renal cookbook by patients!

Help us out!

Donate today [ PayPal button here ]"

type of thing.   Just an idea.

I don't know. Are you serious about a cookbook Bajanne?

Course I am.  Amber has all these recipes and other people have as well, as they have been sharing on the website.  Why not?

[Don't know if I like the donation idea, though.]

Sounds like a good idea. I wanted to do my own but if people are willing to pitch in then I guess that would be alot easier. I should be able to afford $57.

Sorry, I made a big mistake.  It is less than $570 - it is half that - $285.  I had converted the currency when I was discussing it with my sister (the Barbados dollar is half the US).  Does that encourage us anymore, Amber?
Now it can be 5 people at $57 or 10 people at $28.50.

I am sure we can get 10 people at $28.50 that's much more reasonable. Can we call it "The Official I Hate Dialysis.com Cookbook"?  ;) If so I'll promote it here and also be one of the 10  :) I can advertise the heck out of it. Maybe we would have to do re-orders to buy more. I even have some recipes to contribute but they would have to go into the "Cheating" section.  ;) Hey, why not have a cheating section for those special occasions?

ITA, he could make the first "I Hate Dialysis" book a cook book and put a brief synopsis of his story in an introduction which touts the website and announces that more books about dialysis are to follow.

Maybe we could help him put together some small books like: "I Hate Dialysis and Let Me Tell You why", "The I Hate Dialysis Guide to Preventing, Slowing and Understanding Kidney Failure", "The IHD Guide on How to Pick Your Medical Care Team, a Clinic, a Modality",  "The IHD Guide to Understanding Dialysis Medications", "The IHD Guide to Financially Surviving Dialysis", just some quick thoughts, but I think Epoman's autobiography ought to be the second book after the cookbook.

Fine, forget I mentioned anything, but when you say contributions do you mean you want to write a book and get people to give you recipes? For YOUR cookbook? Or is this a community thing? and if it is a community thing what is the problem? Should the name of the cookbook be called "Amber_79's Renal Cookbook"?  ::)

I want to write my own cookbook with my own recipes and also include contributed recipes by other patients. Why should it be called the same name as YOUR website? I am wanting to write other cookbooks as well, I simply asked for advice as to how to go about it. I am very passionate about cooking and it has been one of my dreams for some time.

Amber I think that is a great idea! Do you have your own site where we can give you recipes or what were you thinking? I think if Epoman puts out one he will use all the recipes from this site as it only makes sense. (I might be wrong)

I guess I didn't really explain my intentions properly in my initial post. I would probably get the recipes emailed and I would be testing them out before putting them in a book. I'd like to include photos too. Obviously any contributed recipes would get full credit for whoever submits them. I didn't mean to turn this into a big thread, I just wanted to know how the hell do you get a book published. Didn't mean to tread on toes.

Not at all.  Maybe I just over-reacted to what you were saying, and rushed ahead.  But that would be great if you published your own recipe book.  Go for it!

Since you seem so interested in doing a cookbook here is a link to the one the dietitian at my clinic gives to the patients that request them.  Hopefully it will give you a few ideas of how to make your own, and maybe some ideas for recipes as well.  I don't suggest using these recipes though since they are copy righted.  For some reason the link doesn't start you off at the beginning so just click the arrow button to bring you to the beginning.
