Peru

I'll be going to Peru in a few days and visiting there for three weeks.
I am pre-dialysis so I won't need to worry about that aspect. But today at the nephrologist's office my doctor told me my creatinine is 3.3 with a
GFR of about 15%.  I'm sure my nephrologist would rather I didn't go to Peru. It is just one of those places I've been hankering to visit my whole
life. My husband knows this and planned this trip in celebration of our 20th wedding annaversary. I am aware I am taking a huge chance with my
health. When we first planned the trip in the winter, my kidney function was better and I felt I could handle it. Now I'm beginning to wonder.
We bought "trip insurance" so if we need to cancel any part of the trip, we can. The insurance also provides for helecopter evacuation should
the need arise. But I do feel like I'm gambling with my health.

Sunny, have a great trip!  My GFR and creatinine are the same as yours right now. I would go in a heartbeat.  I keep wanting to do things because I know the day is coming that traveling will be limited to a smaller area.  What a wonderful experience you will have.  I know you will take care of yourself and do all the right things.  Soak it all in, take lots of pictures and enjoy this marvelous opportunity.   It sounds like you have planned well and now you should just go and have fun.  We'll all be looking forward to hearing all about the trip

Sounds like an absolutely wonderful thing to be doing right now.  The trip insurance is your safety net, so you don't need to worry.  Have a great time!

I agree with P and also with P.  Go, enjoy, do as much as you can, you've got the insurance.  I had a chance once to visit Peru and Macchu Picchu but did a different trip instead.  Don't regret the trip I did but still wish I'd managed to get to Peru.  So, from a purely selfish, vicarious living perspective...I wanna see the pics.  Yours will do nicely.

Absolutely go!  Missed opportunities are such a source of regret so don't hesitate.  If you aren't doing so already, maybe you could check with your doctor about what you might change in your diet in order to reduce your chances of problems on your trip (i.e. fluid restriction, less protein, etc.).  I know it would be hard to hold back (it always is when on vacation!) but if you were being proactive you might feel a little more in control of your health situation and be able to relax and enjoy yourself.  I'd love to be able to do more "foreign" travel but am too scared now that I'm on PD.  My husband and I have traveled quite a bit in the US but haven't ventured any further afield.  How I wish now that I'd taken the opportunities for more travel overseas when I was able.

I survived very well, indeed. I'm back home in the U.S.A.
Peru was a wonderful place and we had great adventures. I will post a few pics soon.
On a few occasions, I had to stay in the hotel and take naps in the afternoons, but my husband and two kids went out. That worked for all of us.
Machu Picchu was everything I dreamed it would be and the Jungle was fantastic. No regrets at all. I was very happy to be home on American soil
Saturday night. Poverty in Peru is rampant. People struggle everyday and very few live a life we might consider acceptable. Yet, they make a place for themselves
and do the best they can with what they've got. I think that is the biggest lesson I took away from my trip. Make the best of what you have.

Sunny, I am so glad you had a good trip.  For me, life now is all about making memories.  Moments we can go to in our minds that help get us through bad times.  Can't wait to see pictures.  It is good to come home and sleep in your own bed!      to your husband for making this trip happen.

It is great you got to go to Peru. My hubby is from Peru.  It is a beautiful place. I have seen pictures of it on TV. Macchu Picchu is one of the most famous Inca ruin areas.  How did you do on the trip up to it?  Di you hike, or ride the train?  How were the stairs?  I would love to see your pics.
