Former Notre Dame president Edward Malloy plans to donate a kidney to a woman in Baltimore on Monday.

As part of the swap, the woman's son will donate a kidney to Malloy's nephew.

Malloy originally planned to donate the kidney to his nephew, 41-year-old Johnny Rorapaugh. But a doctor called him about three weeks ago and suggested switching recipients because the woman is closer to Malloy's age, and her son would be a better match for Rorapaugh.

Malloy says he hopes publicity about the transplants will motivate others to donate.

The 67-year-old Malloy was president of Notre Dame from 1987 to 2005.
