Bells Palsy

HI Friends,
Well Dusitn went to the Neuro yday and was diagnosed with Bells Palsy. Last week the left side of his face went numb, his left wont close all the way and he could not pucker. The face has gottan better. Have any of you had Bells Palsy???

Hi Lori
I've never had Bell's Palsy but a neighbour did and it went away in a few months.  I understand that it is caused by trauma  to a cranial nerve and that it's not all that uncommon.  Sometimes it gets better very quickly.  There is lots of info on line.
Did the neuro say whether kidney disease was a factor or is it more random like in the non ESRD population?
In any case I hope it disappears as quickly as it arrived.

The neuo new just by looking at Dustin what it was. He said it would go away on its own but never said anything else. I told Dustin went it happened I thought it was Bells Palsy , Dustin swore he had a stroke. I'll take Bells Palsy over that anyday

An interesting side note on Bells Palsey is that it was named after the first physician to describe it clinically, a Dr. Bell of Edinburgh Medical School, who was, for his great powers of deduction, the model for the Sherlock Holmes stories, since one of his students was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Thank you Lori.  I have lots of hair, mostly as a side effect of cyclosporine and since it grows everywhere I'm just very grateful that it's on my head as well.     Sometimes, when people compliment the hair and I say "Well it's actually a side effect of medication" they'll reply "Oh I need some of that" then I get a chance to explain that they really don't want kidney disease just to get thick hair.
Then I hit them with how we need organs so sign those donor cards and tell your family and they WISH they'd never mentioned the hair.

Lori, my nephew at age 26 was diagnosed with Bells Palsy.  Scared him so much but after a few months it was gone.  He has not had any more problems since then.   I'm glad it wasn't a stroke, but it is no fun when one side of your face isn't working.

I have known people with Bell's Palsy, and it generally clears up quickly.

I have Bell's Palsy.  I woke up with it one morning last March and guess I still have it.  I can close my left eye now but just let me get tired or stressed and it really shows up.  They also told me that it would clear up on its own.  I keep waiting for that day to come.

hi Lori my son woke up with it when he was 17 he was studying really hard for his higher school certificate and the Dr said stress could have triggered it. it took a few months to come good his eye watered all the time he was miserable, hope dustins goes away quickly

One of my sisters had it, but she was living in the US, so I didn't see her when it was really very bad.  She overcame it although you can still see a slight laziness in one eye and her smile is slightly crooked.  A very dear friend of mine is also like that.  I also didn't know her when she was actually going through it.
I have always had a fear of it.  But i try not to think of it since Job said "The thing that i feared has come upon me."
Back home, they say superstitious things like 'it happens if you fall asleep with the moon shining on you', etc.
