Patient Advocate Brings Attention To Silent Killer
May 02 , 2008 by Editor

That Damn Dialysis is a book that has something to offer a very large audience, one that does a great service to both the medical community and to patients undergoing dialysis treatments, or who have a predisposition to chronic kidney disease.

The book is filled with well-researched medical information that would be invaluable to dialysis nurses and caregivers of those inflicted with chronic kidney disease.  It has appeal for patients since it is written as fiction in the form of a humorous and sensitive story about a middle-aged man beginning dialysis, yet it also contains meaningful information for the medical community.  It gives medical professionals a far more compassionate view of the stress and complex emotions experienced by these patients on a daily basis regarding treatment options, their future, and quality of life expectations.  The diagrams and explanations of the disease, treatment options available, and how treatment affects the lives of patients are dynamically illustrated and written.

Cindy Barclay, author of “That Damn Dialysis,” is no stranger to this debilitating disease.  She is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Quality Dialysis in both Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth.  Her twenty years of experience as a Registered Nurse provided her with the vision to initiate staff-assisted home dialysis in 1994.  Cindy sees herself first and foremost as a patient advocate.  This shows in her objectives for writing this book – in an engaging yet realistic way, to bring about awareness and provide information on this disease that would appeal to medical professionals, caregivers, and patients alike.
