NURSE PRAC. WANTS 2nd OPINION FOR LES
«

Hi,
Les just got back from dialysis, the nurse prac.
(who we really like, much better then the nephs
at the unit) wants him to get a 2nd opinion on the
two failed fistulas. This Dr is in Phila, she says he is
very good and would rather see him get a fistula instead
of the graft our vasc. guy wants to do.
Was wondering what you all think- he already had vein mapping-
she said everyone she has referred to this Dr has had very
good outcome with fistulas, and they have all been patients like
Les with a problem getting a good working one.
I am waiting for his office to call me back

If you really like - and trust - the nurse practitioner, then I think it's worth a try. I've gotten the sense, talking to our training nurse, that there are definitely some vascular surgeons better at the fistula thing than others, so maybe another set of eyes & professional opinion might be good.

Go with a 2nd opinion. She's there on the battlefront. She's more savvy than the nephs would be.

I'd trust the nurse practitioner. She's been through almost as much training as a doctor. I recently found out that they have to get, at minimum, a Master's in specialized training! My nurse practitioner seems more knowledgeable than my doctor at times and I love her (you know what I mean)!

Yes, I sure do. She is much more into the patients, really relates to them, and also to the spouse/caregiver-
much more than the Dr. does.
We are rite now waiting for this new Dr's office to call back to set up a time to go in.
Wish us luck!

Hi Anne,
Jenna's first vascular surgeon just wasn't as talented with vein work, I think. He wanted to abandon the first attempt and switch arms after the first one failed - but the second guy reconstructed the artery and made the first surgery work. We got his name from the nurse at Children's Hospital - he was used to working with tiny kids veins for fistula's - and they highly recommended him. (He also does all the movie stars cosmetic vein stuff too - so he has lots of experience
) I think a second opinion certainly couldn't hurt. Good luck!
