How soon after eating are you supposed to take your binders (Tums in my case)?  Or is it better to take your binder before you eat?    :thx;

i was told to take them with meals. i take renegel and that needs to be taken within 30 minutes. if you are eating a large meal or taking a long time you should take some at the beginning and the rest half way through.

I took Fosrenol and found that if I took it more than about twenty minutes after I ate a full meal, then I got ill. With a snack, I would be sure to take it right before I ate. With a tums, I would say probably no more than about 10-15 minutes after you eat, but maybe someone else has a better answer for you.

Thanks for all the responses.  I think I'm going to try to start taking them with my meals or just minutes before.   :thx;

I take Caltrate.

Sometimes it is hard to remember to take them so I found it is best to get use to taking them at the same time. I get my tablets out and take them as I am going to the table. Plate, cutlery, drink, TABLETS.

Len had to take Fosrenol, Renagel and Phoslo. He always took them during meals. Hope this helps you.

I take 2 Renagel each meal...I was told to have at least one in my belly at the start of the meal, to grab as much of that phosphorus as possible...I I either take both right at the beginning or one at the start and one about 1/2 way through. You can take them after you eat, but apparently they aren't as effective that way.

When I do remember to take them properly,  :oops; I take them either during or immediately following my meal.  Someone once said on this website that if you take binders 10 mins after a meal, you might as well not take them.  I am taking Tums.  How many and which kind do you take?

I think you should check with your nephrologist before you take anything.

Habits - I take it before I eat each time.  I find as a habit, it is what i think of each time now before I eat.  I also have them stashed everywhere just in case... in the car, by my bed, by the machine, in my purse, ...

I asked the dietician and she days it does not matter when you take them as long as you take them within a half hour of eating before during or after. I was confused for years, until she told me it does not matter when, as long as you DO take them regularly.
