My name is Bob, and I am about to begin dialysis. My kidney problems started in 1978 when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. I was treated at Duke University Medical Center. It took 6 years to beat it, something that now takes less than a year.

I received Cisplatin as a chemotherapeutic agent at a time when they didn't quite know what to give along with it, so I had two recurrences and a lot of chemo. When I was finished my primary doctor said that I might be on dialysis in 10 years as a result of the negative effect of the platinum compound on my kidneys. Fortunately, they have managed to do the job for 24 years, but now it's time for dialysis.

I had a vascular access graft placed in my upper left arm on August 20.

In the meantime I've picked up an active case of prostate cancer, with a rising PSA after a prostatectomy, so I get to be a poster child for more than one cause.

It looks like I will be starting out on the NxStage program./bobt

Oh my!! What a dubious status, to be the poster child. I'm sure you could cheerfully give that up in a heartbeat!
What a double whammy. On all sides, too! From what I've heard from other people, you will like nxstage!

Welcome Bob.  There is an entire section devoted to the NX stage users here.  (Sounds like a drug doesn't it.)  Along with tons of information on dialysis all over the board. Read and join on in the neighborhood.

i am a 51 year old male on dialysis for 3 years now. This is my second time. My brother donated a kidney to me about 13 years ago. I found this site on another site. I had to laugh when i saw what it was called. I hope to meet people from all over to talk about dialysis.
