In 2004, Prior Lake native, Shad Ireland, became the first ever dialysis patient to complete an Ironman triathlon.
Today, Ireland maintains a year-round training schedule and competes in various triathlons, including Ironman triathlons, which feature a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike race and a 26.2-mile marathon.
Ireland has been on dialysis for more than 22 years. He campaigns worldwide to raise public awareness of chronic kidney disease and to inspire others to proactively meet the challenges of a chronic illness.
Through the Shad Ireland Foundation,
www.shadirelandfoundation.org, and Team Ireland,
www.ironshad.com, he provides fitness and education grants to qualified kidney disease patients helping them to improve their quality of life and achieve their life goals.
On July 14, Ireland will be competing in the Life Time Fitness Triathlon in Minneapolis.
Look for Ireland’s story in the July 7 Prior Lake American.
