Hi,

I've been keeping the www.dialysisethics2.org  up as a reminder of the past of this field of medicine.  Then life took over with my wife and I moving to Denver to watch our one and only granddaughter - and on top of it fixing up a fixer-upper home.  We are finding out why people have kids when they are young, they run you ragged.  But I have got the fixer-upper mostly fixed up and had some time to look at the site.  It is now all updated and upgraded with the old forum working again.  Though the forum is closed to new registration, thought it would be nice to have it viewable again.  This forum does such a great job for people I don't feel much of an urge to open the DE2 forum up again.

If anybody wants a blast from the past you might give the site a visit.  Me, I'm contemplating going off and getting involved in a political campaign going on around here.  The civic duties never end!

And I'll mention it is coming up on 18 years now that my daughter had her one and only transplant.  Her longevity with it is just something else that convinces me it was the right thing to do to get her off reuse back in 2000.

Some might argue one has nothing to do with the other, but there is no arguing reuse was bad for a lady named Betty Allen.  She sounds like a good lady who ought to be remembered.

A little while after I made the choice to stop reuse (with my doctors support who was linked with my center management) the DaVita center and centers under the same ownership stopped the entire reuse program.

Great to hear!!!     Gives me hope that maybe at least reuse is dying a slow death.  I hope Fresenius has been sticking to their no-reuse policy.  I did read this from some years ago about what they were finding:

"but several large studies demonstrated improved survival associated with single use of dialyzers   (5–8 ). The most recent of them was conducted within Fresenius Medical Care–North America (FMCNA) after its decision to forego the reuse procedures that utilized predominantly formaldehyde and bleach: The results demonstrated a modest approximately 7% case-mix adjusted survival advantage for 18,137 patients whose facilities converted to 100% single use after a 90-day lag (i.e., “washout period”), although sensitivity analyses indicated that the survival advantage remained significant with a 60- or 120-day lag period  (8 ).

Another opportunity to prospectively evaluate this issue occurred when FMCNA acquired the Renal Care Group in 2006 and subsequently converted its facilities from dialyzer reuse (predominantly using a peracetic acid mixture) to single use. This population presented a much smaller facility and patient pool available for study, but we hypothesized that a trend toward improved survival could be detected after a 90-day washout period."

Was seeing things as far back as 2000 that reuse was bad news.  Yes, over 18 years it hard to believe it is still around!  I even went as far over a year ago to try to help the proponents of reuse out by trying to find something positive for their side: http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=33865.0  No luck!  But maybe I'm just being stubborn not believing an organization that is run like a taco bell.
