Kidney disease website proving a hit with patientsA WEBSITE providing information for patients who suffer from kidney disease has received one million hits in one year.
The NHS Lothian website,
www.edren.org, the brainchild of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary's renal unit, was designed by members of the hospital's medical, dietetic and social work staff.
It was set up following concerns that many patients were not fully informed about their illness.
The site received more than one million hits last year. It is now recognised as a valuable tool for patients, staff and students.
Neil Turner, professor of nephrology at the ERI, said: "By providing patients with access to the information they need online, we are moving forward to a future where patients can access medical information at the touch of a button.
"The fact it is accessible to patients and health workers all over the world has contributed to the success of the site."
Officially launched in 2005 and piloted in four centres, Edinburgh Renal Unit was among the first centres to introduce the service for its patients and now nearly 500 renal patients from Lothian and the Borders use the site.
