I've just had some lamb brains for dinner (3 brains in fact) & I do feel kind of dull. Does anyone know what the damage may be here? Would brains contain any toxic matter that a 'kidney person' needs to know? Will it affect my lab tests tomorrow?

Per 100g of brain:

Phosphorus 337 mg
Potassium 205 mg
Sodium 134 mg

This is average for meat, so no better/worse than the flesh part of the animal, and better than animal offal. I would guess the "dull" feeling is due to either the high fat content (apparently lamb brains have a high fat content, so when someone calls you a fat head....) or the fact that your blood thickens for a while after eating and blood pressure drops, making it harder to operate your own brain properly.

As a PS: If you eat something you shouldn't potassium/phosphorus wise, you aren't going to notice any immediate symptoms so how you feel after eating is no guide on how safe/unsafe the meal was. And when you do eventually notice a symptom it will be something serious like a heart attack or stroke, so be too late to do anything except 'phone for an ambulance and prey. So don't worry about things like feeling a bit "dull" after food, this will have nothing to do with your kidney diet (although they could still mean you ate something that is harmful in some other, non kidney related, way).

OK, if you don't like that meal, try one of my favourite breakfast items: Black pudding. This is basically oatmeal, but instead of making it with milk or water, you make it with blood (most commonly pigs blood, but any animal will do). Add pig fat to the mix, plus a few spices and barley to flavour. Then allow to cool and set. Cut into slices and fry. Yummy and healthy (apart from the pig fat) and considered by some dietitians to be a"SUPERFOOD". Because of the high iron content, it is a good thing to eat just before/after you take your EPO.

So, if you don't like Athena's lamb's brains, fancy a share of my fried pig's blood oatmeal?

Rerun, I did have a bit of that reaction, yes. In the past I loved lamb brains. So mushy & creamy in taste!

Growing up in different places we've all developed different eating habits.

What may seem perfectly fine and healthy on the farm may not seem so tasty, in fact downright disgusting to someone raised in the city.

It's ALL Good.  Once you get past the idea of eating something out of your 'Normal.'


I was taught to fry brains with eggs.


Still have not tried fried testicles.
