Just came across this. Has anyone tried it? I'm not baking that much lately, but perhaps I'll give it a go in the future.

That's interesting because from my understanding most of us need sodium bicarbonate for dialysis?!  I know I take over 1800 mg of sodium bicarb. daily and my numbers are still low.  I'm also not supposed to have high calcium intake, but need a vitamin D supplement to absorb any calcium I do ingest.  I can see how the potassium control would be good, but that's it.

Correct me if I'm wrong folks?! ???

I just make my own - cream of tartar and bi-carb soda.  No phosphates there!  I don't have trouble with phosphates yet, but I think it's worth avoiding phosphate raisers anyhow.

it's just deceptive marketing Baking Soda IS  sodium bicarbonate.
I am pre-D and I take baking soda straight or in water (dr told me to start taking sodium bicarb but baking soda is sooooo much cheaper)
And MaryD is right you can make BAKING POWDER from 1 part baking soda and 2 parts cream of tartar.

And we get ours at Sam's club 5 pounds for about $4.

I would be wary of taking this product without clearing it with your neph.  Since it contains magnesium which can build up if taken in excess.  To my knowledge, kidney patients should not take medication that contains magnesium.

Hello,
I have been reading with great interest about taking baking soda for pre-dialysis patients.  I am pre myself and am desperate to prolong the function that I have left.  The best advice I've read it to take 1/8 to 1/4 a teaspoon in water - 3 times a day.

Has anybody had success with this?

I see my doc on Thursday.  I'm sure he will either say "Take this medicine" and prescribe a new RX,  or "Go ahead, it shouldn't really hurt anything."

My neph started prescribing sodium bicarb for me once my kidney function declined to the point where, despite my best dietary efforts, my potassium started creeping up.

He explained to me that taking the prescription tablets, which were very cheap, was safer in that the quality was more closely monitored and the quantity could be more easily modified as my renal function declined and potassium became more difficult to control.

Sodium bicarb doesn't prolong kidney function, rather, it protects you from the effects of decreased function.

I personally preferred the prescription tablets as I didn't want to faff about concocting weird brews, and I didn't fancy swallowing baking soda or drinking liquid with sand in it, especially since I was taking 12 tablets a day at the end of my pre-D days.  Again, with my insurance, it was very cheap.

Thanks MooseMom...

I see the doc in a few hours.  He's undoubtedly going to schedule me for a fistula.

No fun,

Interesting, because I knew someone who added sodium bicarbonate/baking powder in his bath
and he believed it would stop him from the urge of scratching...

I have tried it myself but could not notice any difference, with or without sodium bicarbonate/baking powder...
the only help against possible urges of scratching is for me only to put a little cream on my body after every shower/bath...

Did get some of the books.
