Newbie from MN

I am on peritoneal dialysis. I started about 2 weeks ago. It's been a long hard road for me. The doctors found cancer in one of my kidneys and removed it in 2009 and then we found out that my remaining kidney had scar tissue on it and it slowly stopped working. I slept for like 20 hrs a day and could barely breathe. It was bad. The day after thanksgiving I had my catheter put in and a major hernia repair at the same time. I was in the hospital for almost a week and it was very hard for me to recover since I didn't have the energy. I had to wait a month to start dialysis to make I was healed. We did the training for manual bags and the cycler and after a couple dialysis exchanges I was alive again! Really! But now there is a huge problem! That machine is hurting my bladder during the drain phase! I've been reading up on it and I've tried different things to do....close the transfer set a little bit, lower the machine, pinch the line, move around, lay with your legs in the air, etc. and nothing it working. Major drain pain in the bladder! So in my search, I found this site. It's sad when I feel defeated....doctors don't know what to do about the pain....machine is painful....on this med because of the side effects from this med...just a merry-go-round. Anyways, I'm actively looking for the answers to fix me!! Thank you for the add!

Hi there Laura, and welcome! I did PD for my dialysis modality, and I loved it. I do understand about the drain pain, as I had it from time to time, though not as much as you seem to be. The thing that causes the pain is the end of your catheter getting stuck against the side of your peritoneum. I was typically able to break that suction by pinching the line off and moving like I was doing the twist. It typically moved the line off the surface and relieved the pain. Hope this helps some. My husband also does PD and we have been lucky that he has not experienced this.  I am sorry you are having pain.  This is a great site to ask questions or just vent and get support.  I am glad you found us!

Oh Laura I suddenly remember that I had that, and they put the cycler than on tidal (so it never sucks empty) Have you tried that yet?
