it's been a few weeks since I had a week long stomach bug with diarrhea and emptied myself out. Now I haven't gone well since and feeling pretty bad. Any suggestions?Anyone else on dialysis been in my shoes? I don't know what to do!

Are you eating well?  Fruits works for me.  I eat a lot of fruit with and during my meals.  If that does not work, try a laxative that works well with dialysis patient.  Hope everything goes well.

Dailysis patient for since 1999 and still kicking it strong.  I was called for a transplant but could not get it due to damage veins from extremely high blood pressure.  Have it under control now, on NxStage System but will receive dailysis for the rest of my life.  Does life sucks because of this.  ABOLUTELY NOT!  Life is what you make it good, bad, sick, or healthy.  Praise God I'm still functioning as a normal person just have to take extra steps.

Hello There!

Prune juice!!! Seems to be what helps me. If it would get to bad though maybe your doctor could prescribe you something.
When I had my transplant I was not allowed to go home till I pooped haha. The nurses and doctors insisted on giving me all these meds. to get things moving, of course all that did was make things worse! So I kept drinking prune juice and WALLA ... it worked! haha I also used it while on dialysis when needed too.

- 1995 - 12 yrs old found out my kidneys were both failing
- 1996 - Dec. 3 I received my 1st kidney transplant at age 13, after 7/mths on the waiting list
- 2005 - In Aug. transplant failed after 9.5 years, had to have a nephrectomy due to being very ill & massive hypertension
           - End of Aug. 1st time on dialysis
- 2006 - Had my fistula placed & ready to go
- 2010 - My little Miracle was born 6/mths into the pregnancy, weighing 2.4 lbs & 13.25 in long
          - Found out my PRA is 100% & I have antibodies that CAN'T be decreased
- 2013 - Oct. 2nd  *** I finally received my kidney!!! ***
          - Dec. 3rd I had 3.5 parathyroids removed, due to them interfering w/my new kidney.

Soft fruit and high fiber vegetables are you friends.

Raisin Bran, oatmeal, green beans, types of foods that have large amounts of bulk fiber and high water content.

This is very important to me being on PD tends to 'dry' things out and it is very easy to get a bit constipated.

I try not to rely on stool softeners, or to add oils to my diet.

Hope it works out,  I had a tough time when they placed my catheter last year.  I suspect a small section of the intestine 'turned over' closing off flow and backed me up for days.  The pressure caused unbearable pain untill I actuall felt and heard a 'pop'.  I was worried that it had ruptured.  It was such an intense flalsh of increased pain then the pain was GONE. ????  Within the hour I finally had the 'urge' and everything turned out normal, finally.

That was a relief, in more ways than one!

When not doing dialysis I am a physician ,for over 25 years now(not a nephrologist)

Miralax or Peri-colace are probably your best options. Peri-colace includes the stool softener and laxative. It comes in a pill. Miralax is a powder you mix with liquid and drink. It works on most everyone. Do not take them together. Pick one.

I used MiraLax daily just to keep everything moving. My PD team had me on it from the start.

Isn't prune juice high in potassium?

Honestly I am not sure. That is just what would help me pre & post transplant. Medications never really helped me in that department.

I try to avoid meds and go the fruit and fiber route.

My potassium is fine so I eat a handful of raisins while on the machine.

When my son has issues we give him prunes which take a day or so to work. He calls them big raisins.

For me, any kind of juice with grape in it does the trick. I like diet cran-grape which tastes pretty good and works overnight pretty well.

If it gets bad I add fiber. Sugar free Metamucil or equivalent works. Or a solid form of fiber is Z-Bars for kids. They have massive amounts of fiber. Why they are for kids puzzles me? A couple of those will kick start you. Just a hint, don't eat 17 of them over the course of a weekend. Just saying....

A few small pieces of cantaloupe usually work but be careful as cantaloupe is high in Potassium.

Another method is two or three dried apricots and a cup of coffee. Make sure you take a tiny bite of apricot with each sip of hot coffee.

If you decide to give a try, be sure you are at home and near the bathroom, just in case...
