Hi Everyone

I worked in dialysis ten years ago as a renal dietitian. After leaving in 2003, I did many many other things as an RD. Now i have returned to dialysis and I recently found this board after hearing about it in a job orientation/training session. I checked it out and I love it. So many patients talking to each other honestly about they feel about dialysis. I think the internet is a great way for people to share and support each other. Anyway, I wanted to join so I can listen in on the conversations. I really enjoy working with hemodialysis and PD patients and want to help them have better quality of life. I know the diet can be extremely difficult, you have to be creative to keep it interesting. This month I will making high protein rice krispie treats with protein powder and handing them out on the unit. I appreciate any and all ideas you guys have and will be reading along with you, maybe chiming in from time to time with questions or comments. thanks.

This is superb news as it sounds like this site was mentioned in a positive way. We get reports from time to time that patients have been told to avoid the forum because some medical professionals believe we only focus on the negatives of renal failure and sit around feeling sorry for ourselves all day. In actuality, this forum is all about helping people make the best of a bad situation.

I hope we will hear more from you, but regardless, thanks for letting us know you're out there and that you appreciate the site. :)

Hi Karlise!  Welcome to our community, and I have a question for you already!

Do any of your patients talk to you about how difficult it is to keep to the pre-renal/renal diet when s/he is the one who prepares the meals for the family?  None of us want to inflict our special diet on our spouse or kids, yet at the same time, we don't like having to prepare separate meals for everyone, either.  Do you ever find yourself helping out not just your patient but also the family as a whole?  I've always been curious about this.  Thanks!

We are here to HELP. Its time for the "professionals " to take a good look here. We do a lot of commiserating , yes, but also have a LOT of CRITICAL info. Even as a doctor I have learned a lot here.
I hope through my offering "medical information and some education'' that we can be even more useful. When Hemodoc, Peter, is around we add even more.
This site is very useful and important . It would be good if all Dialyisis units and nephrologists would take an honest look and see we have a lot to recommend.

:waving;  Hi, Karlis, welcome to IHD. Nice to have a renal dietitian on board! I know when I was first diagnosed the diet was the hardest thing to understand. It seemed like I would never be able to figure out what I could eat safely, and there are no renal dietitians locally. Fortunately, I found IHD and the members advice and recipes were a godsend. I don't think we'll overwhelm you with questions, but you might want to brace yourself just in case!    ;D
