 I was never a heavy person. However since getting kidney failure that has changed completely. Pre dialysis I was given cozar. I was told this drug would stop the progression of kidney failure. It didn't, I fact it did the exact opposite. I slept a lot and binge ate at night and found out after a month of being on the drug. It was killing me ( literally) so I was taken off of it. But I noticed since I started the drug a gained weight. Even after stopping the medication. ( and no longer binge eating) I went from 102lbs ( pre cozar) to 145 in less than 6 months. So on my own I tried to lose weight. I got down to 136. Then dialysis started. ( I'm on pd) after I started dialysis I started gaining again. I found our after switching dialysis centers that the center I was at originally had me on the wrong dialysis script for over a year!!! I'm now at 165 lbs. I'm afraid I won't be able to get transplanted because of my weight. I was told by upenn, that from the last time I was there ( 154) if I were to gain anymore weight. They will not transplant me. Has anyone else had this much of an issue? And just so you know I am not diabetic.

Cozaar /losartan does not always slow the prgression of kidney disease. It can in some casesbut not all. Do you know what caused your kidney disease?
The weight gain is very unuaual for this type drug. It may not have been the real cause as you continued for months after withdrawal of it.  That tends to indicate some other reason.  Have you had your thyroid checked?
Pd solutions have a lot of glucose in them which can add to the weight issue.  The other possibility is that the loss of protein/albumin before and during dialysis has caused the increased appetite and binge eating as you are craving protein in food. Kidney disease can spill a lot of protien as can dialysis. (especially peritoneal)

Yes, I have had my thyroid checked twice. It's fine. The cause of my kidney disease ( I think) was prematurity. I was born at 26 weeks.

I have trouble controlling my weight. PD is not helpful with weight. Try to control your eating and drinking so that you don't have to use many red bags. They have the most glucose. But there are no easy solutions to the weight problem. Can you exercise at all? Even walking can help. And you'll have to eat healthy. Protein, vegetables, whatever fruit you can handle based on water and potassium. Cut out sweets and snacks. I know it's easier said than done. I struggle too. But you might as well try.

I think 156 pounds is a ridiculous top level unless you're 3'6".

Yup! I can exercise, I'm actually going back to the gym tomorrow. If I can't make it to the gym I try to walk around my apartment complex.  I'm just amazed at the weight gain. It happened so rapidly.. And now I am having a hard time losing it. I was drinking ensure for a bit because I wasn't really eating. Now that I'm off sensipar I can eat a little better. I dunno.. But I'm trying to work on getting the weight down.

When I was on PD my weight bounced around and settled in at 110 kilos which is about 240 pounds, I was about ready to go to the strongest bag when infection set in and they removed my tube.  I started hemodialysis on July of 2013 with chest catheters and finally going to my tunnel catheter in Aug. of 2013.  Since then I've dropped 30 kilos, about 180 and they are still adjusting my dry weight down (slowly).  I do my hemodialysis 6 times a week at 3 hours per session.  I'm in training and getting ready to switch to home hemodialysis where I've heard nothing but positive results.  Good luck with your PD and controlling the weight. :2thumbsup;
