It is with a very heavy heart that I share that Hanify died today.

I'm still too upset to write any more. She was a great optimist. There is another hole in my heart.

Indeed, she was a good un. She was my first friend at IHD. We became immediate buddies, as she did with everyone. This year she came to the States and dropped by to have dinner with us. We had such a good time. Her husband Paul is amazing and Her little girl is adorable. I will miss Bern so very, very much. RIP sweetheart.

Such a shock. Cannot even process it right now. So young and, yes Aleta, so relentlessly hopeful.

My thoughts are with Paul and Molly and of course, her friends on IHD.

I can talk a bit more about Bern today. But the tears come easily....

Right up until she died she was joking. She always had a bright outlook and put up the good fight. But more than that, she was always thinking of ways to help others. When Dan was in the hospital, Bern was trying to arrange a way for folks to help another friend afford visiting him. And even the day she died, Bern was helping another renal patient.

And then there were all the plans she made for another mutual friend, trying to find ways for him to work around his kidney failure.

She never complained about her own condition. She did joke about it. the night before she died we were joking about ways to raise her BP so she could have that life-saving dialysis. And then it was time for her to go.....

People like Bern are few and far between. She was a ray of sunshine and a font of hope. I am not alone in grieving her.

I do not know her but still felt sad about her passing.
Have ESRD for almost 19 years but until 2 years ago, got into in-center hemo then found this site few months ago, I did not know ESRD impact so many people and their family so much.
Lost someone to this hateful disease is really really make me sad!

I was really shocked when I got back from my trip and saw Bern was having trouble (via FB) then her passing was a real shock to me. As others have said she was such a positive and caring character and did all she could for others. I'd always joked with her about coming over to NZ and visiting and stuff... and I never did ( I feel a great deal for her hubby, dear Molly and her entire extended family and friends at this time.

Yet another, tragic, reminder that things can change in an instant with kidney disease and again to live life!

RIP.

to clear things up. I believe that it was her heart failure and liver failure from having cancer. So it was strictly (or so it seems to me) from the cancer. Its still really sad because I liked her and talked to her on Facebook. She had cancer too and that caused the heart failure which caused her death.
Atleast that is what her daughter (i think) told me.

You're right, Lisa...

The type of cancer Bern had caused deposits of rogue proteins in her heart, liver and kidneys... These caused the organs to fail, and is the reason Bern's kidneys failed in the first place...

I haven't yet written a tribute to 'Our Bern'... It's still too raw... Everytime I write about her, I cry!... I adored the water this wonderful woman walked on!... LOL!....

Oh Gawd, I'm off weeping again... Pass the tissues!..

Love to all...
