Hi all!  Has anyone else had the issue with their bicarbonate levels being extremely low?  Mine is at 16 and no matter how much Sodium Bicarb. I take, I can't get it any higher.  I was "banned" from acidic foods, like tomatoes (which I love), but I saw my neph today, and he said it doesn't matter what I eat (in terms of acidity) because we can't get my level to rise at all.

I know the bicarbonate deals with blood Ph, but I forgot to ask what happens if we never get the level up?  I'm taking 3 sodium bicarb. pills 3x daily.
Suggestions?  Ideas?  Similiar experiences?

I had low bicarb before my first transplant. I took 8-9 tablets/day. Hated them. But even then it never got to normal. Wish I had better advice.

I did get my bicarb levels up before I lost my dad's kidney, and in the end I took them like sweets.
26 a day, so you could ask for more, and see what happens. I do remember burping a bit, but hey bicarb was within normal levels.

good luck Cas
