Colonoscopy after kidney transplant

Kidney transplant recipients have a high prevalence of advanced colorectal neoplasia (13%) and colonoscopy surveillance may be a better option than FOBT, according to a study by Adelaide researchers in the BMJ. Researchers from the Royal Adelaide Hospital conducted a study to investigate whether FOBT screening of kidney transplant recipients  might be justified. Their aim was to determine the prevalence of advanced colorectal neoplasia and evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of FOBT screening compared with colonoscopy.

The study involved 229 kidney transplant recipients over 50 years old and who were an average of nine years post-transplant

They found that advanced colorectal neoplasia was found in 13% of patients, including 2%  with high grade dysplasia and 2%  with colorectal cancer.
