It's been a week since my center has started using my access, I've noticed my center has done nothing with the catheter that's still in my body, not cleaned it, flushed it, changed the dressings, etc. Should they be doing this stuff even though the catheter is not being used?

May 13, 2009, went to urgent care with shortness of breath
May 19, 2009, went to doctor for severe nausea
May 20, 2009, admited to hospital for kidney failure
May 20, 2009, started dialysis with a groin cath
May 25, 2009, permacath was placed
august 24, 2009, was suppose to have access placement but instead was admited to hospital for low potassium
august 25, 2009, access placement
January 16, 2010 thrombectomy was done on access

As I recall, Jenna's access was used for about a month before they removed her tunnel catheter, and during that time they didn't touch it.

Jenna is our daughter, bad bladder damaged her kidneys.
Was on in-center hemodialysis 2003-2007.
7 yr transplant lost due to rejection.

They should definitely be changing the dressings every day.  I would hound them every session until they change the dressing.

My center had me treat it as though it were still in use, flushing, cleaning, dressing, etc.

i had to take care of my own central line when my fistula was ready to be used.   I just flushed it with saline and locked it with sodium citrate.  I used an alcohol swab to clean around the area and then changed the dressing once a week.

My center changed the dressing with each treatment, and, if I remember right, flushed it once a week. Or was it the other way around? Either way, yes, it was taken care of while not in use.

Mar 2010 - Started Aranesp shots - well into CKD4
Dec 1, 2010 - Transplant Eval Appt - Listed on Feb 10, 2012
Apr 18, 2011 - Had fistula placed at GFR 8
April 20, 2011 - Had chest cath placed, GFR 6
April 22, 2011 - Started in-center HD. Continued to work FT and still went out and did things: live theater, concerts, spend time with friends, dine out, etc
May 2011 - My Wonderful Donor offered to get tested!
Oct 2011  - My Wonderful Donor was approved for surgery!
November 23, 2011 - Live-Donor Transplant (Lynette the Kidney gets a new home!)
April 3, 2012 - Routine Post-Tx Biopsy (creatinine went up just a little, from 1.4 to 1.7)
April 7, 2012 - ER admit to hospital, emergency surgery to remove large hematoma caused by biopsy
April 8, 2012 - In hospital dialysis with 2 units of blood
Now: On the mend, getting better! New Goal: No more in-patient hospital stays! More travel and life adventures!

My center cleaned it each time I was treated.

Kidney Failure 1997
CAPD 1997 , Stopped 1997 due to infections evey 28 days
Started In Center Hemo 1997
Received Kidney/Pancreas transplant 1999 at UCLA
Wife and I had son in 2001 , by donor for my part (Stopping the illness train)
Kidney failed 2011 , Back on Hemo . Looking to retransplant as the Kidney is still working

My clinic flushes my catheter with heparin every treatment, recaps it with new caps, examines the tunnel, cleans that and re-bandages it.  I believe this is to prevent clotting in the catheter and infection of the tunnel site.

Yes, anything that is susseptible to infections, should be cleaned and redressed every session.
