severe back pain

Several years ago, my mom had a severe seizure that crushed two of her vertebra, and a year ago, one more was crushed, so she has chronic, sometimes severe back pain. She developed a cold a couple weeks ago, and has been coughing really bad, which has made the pain worse. Just this evening however, she suddenly got the worst pain she's ever experienced for no apparent reason. She was ok one minute and doubled over and in tears the next. The pain is mostly in the ribs on her right side, and they are very sharp pains. We just got back from the ER and they did X-rays and a CT scan, and they couldn't find anything that's causing it. I've been so accustomed to being the one in the hospital bed and my family standing around me. This time it was the other way around, and I just felt so helpless seeing my mom laying there crying in pain. She will be following up with her primary care dr and her pain management dr to try to get to the bottom of this.

Thinking of you and your Mom
I really hope the cause can be found and a form of treatment to help relieve her pain. Chronic pain is not pleasant, that's for sure!

Well, she saw her dr today and he said she may have a couple ribs that are broken or separated from her spine. She is going to have more X-rays done to get a better idea. Unfortunately if it is that, it could take months to heal, and shes still having pain that is almost unbearable. She is not able to do anything because it hurts so much to move. All that can be done right now is pain management. She has been prescribed Vicodin, and it helps, but not much. I don't know if there is anything stronger that is available that can be prescribed outside of a hospital, but she will be able to ask her pain management dr about that. She needs a lot of prayer right now, and so does my dad who is taking care of her. I'll keep you all posted on what we find out.
