It's all systems go!!

We heard yesterday that my mother & I are still compatible so the transplant can go ahead.

It was confirmed months ago that she was a suitable donor but we had to wait until after my final nephrectomy before doing the transplant. A few things got in the way of the nephrectomy but it was finally done on 4th May.

We had to have further compatibility tests a few weeks ago because in January I had 6 blood transfusions due to internal bleeding from a stomach ulcer which left me with a hemoglobin level of 4.9 & meant I spent a month in & out of hospital. There were concerns that due to the blood transfusions my anti-bodies wouldn't be the same as when the transplant tests were first carried out. I knew they would eventually return to normal but it was a case of how quickly will it happen & thankfully it didn't take long.

The transplant team in Bristol want to meet us one last time just to check we are both in good health physically and mentally but once they've seen us we will get a date for the surgery!

I'm very happy for you. I got my first transplant from my mother and it lasted 11 years. I hope yours lasts even longer. We were a really good match and it was great having all that good time. I wish you the best. It was interesting recovering together after the operation. I had felt so bad before it and so after I felt much better. My mother had been healthy and after had the usual post-op pain and stuff. I had pain too but the good feeling outweighed it. So after it looked like I was better and she was worse. But that was only for a few weeks. Since then my mom has had no problems. Her creatinine is checked once a year and is always less than 1. You're going to love your transplant.

Aww, thanks for sharing your story jeannea. Your mother is wonderful to have given you the gift. I hope our story is as successful as yours.
