I had a triple by pass about three  weeks ago. The pain in the sternum is pretty intense and I am not even sure if it has improved in this period. Those of you or your loved ones who have had open heart surgery, how long did it take to overcome post operation pain. I really need to know this as I can put up with pain as long as there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

sorry can't help with by pass surgery, but with the pain and recovery, your literally looking at months, if not a year or long for the insides to recover substantially.

hope other than the pain , hope surgery was successful

good luck :thumbup;

My father had triple bypass surgery when he was in his early 70s.  This was back in the early 90s.  He was out of the hospital in 10 days and hardly had any pain at all, which I found astounding.  His recovery was quite remarkable, but then again, he was in good shape before surgery.  He was a runner so had generally good health.  I don't know if that made a difference in his seemingly easy recovery.

murf, I have never had bypass surgery but I was witness to my Father having gone through it twice. My Dad was in pain for a long time, alot of it is from the muscle cutting and stretching for access and also the fact that they fill you up with air during the procedure. From what I can remember my Dad had tenderness for 6 months or more. He was a bear to be around and experienced a little memory loss as well which really bothered him. Unfortunately he passed away from cancer but I know he was never 100%. I have had other relatives that had pain for a really long time but recovered feeling better than ever. So it really does depend on the person, I was told that it depends on your health, weight condition prior to surgery.

If you are concerned contact your surgeon or family doctor to double check.
