I've gotten rather hooked on smoothies and most days I seem to have two. I've been using a variety of frozen fruits, bananas (no potassium issues yet), and either egg white protein in French Vanilla or whey protein in chocolate. I like egg white protein better since it has 23 grams of protein and very little phosphorus. Wheiy protein has 15 grams of protein and a higher phosphorus level.

I think it's working well, but my labs will tell next week. Any other suggestions for variety? I'm thinking about adding vegetables to smoothies. Which ones would be good? I tried putting protein powder in pancake mix, but it made the pancakes kind of tough.

Is there such a thing as too many smoothies? I'm starting to prefer them to real food sometimes and I could easily see replacing a couple of meals/day with them.

I've tried the egg white protein powder in the past but it made the food/smoothie taste "eggy".  I've switched to whey protein and it seems to be better.  I use an unflavored one with my oatmeal and a strawberry flavored one with my smoothies.  I usually add strawberries, a scoop of the powder and a little bit of almond milk (unflavored).  This turns out pretty good and is great after a workout.

Is there a particular brand of the egg white powder that you use?  Does it have the "eggy" taste?  I'd like to move back to one because of the lower phosphorus levels.

stuman, I use MRM brand, French Vanilla flavor. I haven't noticed an eggy taste. It's pretty high in potassium, but I'm fortunate in that potassium isn't an issue for me yet. I'm a big jeaous that you get to eat oatmeal though! I'd love some oatmeal, but I don't like non-dairy milks, so I've given up any type of cereal for now. I remember seeing the whey ice cream recipe before, but I haven't been brave enough to try it yet. Maybe I'll get experimental this weekend.

My dietician told me that the benefits of oatmeal outweigh the negative things like phos/potassium.  I've been eating oatmeal for breakfast at least three times a week for the past couple of months and as long as I take my binders I'm good.  My labs have been perfect over the last couple of months.  Plus I eat my oatmeal a little differently than most people; I use butter, salt and pepper in mine, so I'm not adding any extra phos.

But thanks for the brand name, I'll search for it locally and give it a shot.

And maybe I'll go get myself some oatmeal this weekend. Trader Joe's has some that makes it very easy. Pre-cooked steel-cut frozen in individual packages. Since it'll likely be an occassional treat, I don't want to buy a full box and have it end up with bugs.

Anybody else have any good suggestions? I'm just starting down this protein road and could use some guidance.

Deanne, can you share your recipe?

Fox, I've been drinking Nutivia Organic Hemp Protein powder for a vegetarian protein source (approved by my dietician). It doesn't taste as good as whey but it does the job.  It has a earthy taste to it.

I started using Dialyvite Whey Plus which is designed for D people combining it with my cereal (Special K Protein & Shredded Wheat) mixed with Novasource Renal instead of milk.

This combination tastes like vanilla with no eggy after taste making breakfast my favorite meal.

I wish my husband liked protein powder because I could mix him up a lot of different flavors in the blender and it would kill two birds with one stone so to speak...protein with a little measured hydration. Instead, he eats protein bars. Don't think I'll ever try throwing one of those in the blender.
