Hi everyone, I'm new, and I searched the board for this, but can't find a solid answer.

My dietitian said I can drink some kinds of alcohol, but did not elaborate past red wine and "some other kinds". I would guess no grain spirits, and no beer, since they are too high in phosphorous, but what about rum or other sugary liquors? Any help would be great. I'm on PD if it makes a difference. My GF is killing me right now for drinking two glasses of red wine earlier (come on its Friday!) , and I'd love to have some backup.

Well after transplant, I'm told I can have beer, a litle wine, but no hard alcohol.
For you, how are your labs doing pre having a drink and after having a drink. If that hasn't been tried, something to try with a doctors ok of course to see how your levels are effected.

If I go out (maybe once a month) I'll have a Short Island Ice Tea.  The Long Islands have too much fluid.  Probably no beer.  Are you diabetic?  I say anything in moderation.  One stiff drink between sessions and then watch your labs.  Fluid would be my main concern.

You would think that if your kidneys don't work that you would have a drink and stay buzzed.  But, you "liver" processes alcohol not your kidneys.

Well, I'm not diabetic, and my labs are OK. What lab values would be relevant? I think I still have some kidney function, but not much. I was a day from death when I made it to the hospital.

I was kinda buzzed off the two glasses of wine. I woke up with a slight hangover surprisingly. I stopped drinking a couple years ago, due to the migraines/cluster headaches I had, which may have been due to high blood pressure. I don't need to get drunk, but it definitely relaxes me. I'm pretty high strung.

Is non-alcoholic beer just as bad as the real version as far as phosphorous goes? I used to brew beer, if I could brew my own NA that would be awesome.

I've been drinking shots of vodka with no real bad results. At least as a clear spirit it's not that high in any of the bad stuff(that I know of) and yeah.. bang for your fluid buck definitely. A bit of beer is OK but it does contain potassium so you need to be aware, plus of course the fluid content itself can be difficult to manage.

I also agree that I find that post starting D the buzz is much quicker to come by - I'm sure it's toxin related. I suppose that's good though that it takes a lot less to get tipsy?!!

When they say you're a two pot screamer that's just as well given the fluid restrictions!  :rofl;
