Did many of you have problems with your PTH level before you started dialysis? I'm still a long way from dialysis with about 25% function, 2.70 creatinine. I've been on Calcitrol for four months on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays only. My PTH continued to rise after starting Calcitrol and is around 300 now, so my neph changed me to a daily dose instead of three days/week. She said that if a daily dose doesn't pull my PTH level back into line, she'll put me on Sensipar. Should I be concerned that my PTH level is already an issue with a relatively high kidney function?

my pth was high long before my kidneys had any problems. i had one of my parathyroids out which solved the problem for a while. it was high again by the time i started dialysis. sensipar has resolved the problem.

Yeah I also had high PTH and ended up on daily doses of calicitrol long before I started dialysis.

I started calcitrol 3X a week. Moved up to twice a day last month as a result of increasing PTH. I'm sure it won't be long before I start D.

Since I started dialysis as an emergency I don't know if I had any trouble before as I never seen a doctor until my kidney failure. I was on cincplar but it made me sick, now I'm on zemplar.

When I was first diagnosed with ESRD, my PTH was already up to 1200 or thereabouts.  (And I was itching terribly.)  So my PTH must have been rising for months prior at least.

It took six months of dialysis and meds to knock that down to around 300.  It's been below 300 ever since.

My partners PTH level was extremely high, well before he had started diaylsis. He chipped bones because the level was so high for so long, despite being on Calcitriol & phosphate binders. It was infact the surgery to have his parathyroids out, which caused more damage to his kidney function and therefore resulted in dialysis soon after.

My PTH started to rise at about 20% GFR. I am now at 15% GFR and didn't try Calcitriol till now. Calcitriol made me so nauseous I had to stop. Anyone else have that side effect? I hope it works to bring down your PTH soon, but I think your experience with PTH levels sounds about right for where you are in ESRD.

Calcitrol upsets my tummy too. They want me to do four now and I cannot but take two and get through the day.

I haven't had any side effects from it. Maybe because I take it right before bed so I'm fine by morning? But then, I've been pretty lucky with most meds. I've only really had bad side effects with prednisone, but then, doesn't everyone!?

Not me. I had no problems taking it at all.

Really this just goes to show that you must swap medication around to find the right one for you.
