Before you started dialysis was anyone on lasix. and it dried up your kidneys..   I am having an awful time with retaining fluid  Dr, has uppped my lasix to 40 mg 2xs a day . and it seems I still am not peeing as much  I should.  My other Dr. took me off because he said it was drying my kidneys up .  Hop this makes sense to someone.

Getting the heck out of town.

Was on lasix before I started dialysis.  Lost quite a few pounds of water weight.  It did not dry my kidneys.  Are you sure you are taking in enough fluids?  I mean, if it isn't there you can pee it out.  Sounds like they should be cutting out your laxix.  After starting and losing the water I would then be told  to take a lasic only if I ganed a couple or three pounds.  Then stop.  I'm sure your situation is different though.  I think the "other doctor" was right it just I'd never heard it expressed ad drying up the kidney.

My hubby was taking Lasix before dialysis.  He was taking 80 mgs in the am and 80 mgs in the pm. Never heard of it drying up the kidneys, as the current Dr about it -- tell him what the other Dr said and ask him what he meant.  It controlled the potassium for my hubby!

I was on Lasix for three years before dialysis and the doc never mentioned it hurting my kidneys...in fact I had a transplant two months ago and the Neph Surgeon put me back on Lasix for swelling and I asked if it would hurt the new kidney and he said absolutely not.

I am prescribed 40mg a day and have been for many years.  I was told to take it only if i need it though.  I get up every morning  do my business and weigh naked.  I write the weight on a calender everyday.  I monitor how much fluid I have on me by the fluctuation in my weight.  I have the doctors blessing to take more than 40mg a day if I need it.  Many hot summer days I don't have to take it at all.  I notice as my GFR falls I am experiencing a decline in output and I am having to take it daily now.

You must be careful with it.  It does deplete your potassium.  Going too low on your potassium is dangerous to pre-dialysis patients, just as going too high is for dialysis patients.

At some point the lasix will have less of an effect as your kidneys fail and you will need higher doses to get desired output and eventually that won't help so I am told.

I never heard of the kidneys drying up, unless thats a nice way of saying your "causing your kidneys to fail quicker".  Which I suppose  is a possibility.  It forces your kidneys to work harder and that cannot be good for them.

DISCLAIMER:  I ain't no doc :)

# If kidney problems seem to be getting worse (especially for those with very severe kidney disease), Lasix should be stopped because Lasix can make kidney problems worse.

yeah i am skeptical about most medicines ,i used to have high blood pressure and used to take medicine which made me feel  worse,i stopped taking them and started following the diet and taking Natural medicines boom my high blood pressure is gone without the aid of chemical based medication,I took Sensipar and it dried up my kidneys i could'nt use the bathroom{1 or 2}for like a whole day i was like this ain't natural.so i stopped taking it.Now i just take Fosrenol and Natural medicine and i pee well even better than before,My advice to you is try finding natural alternatives to chemically based medicine.God Bless You.
