« on: November 19, 2009, 08:59:35 AM »

I had the flu well over a week ago  not sure if it was H1N1 but I did have the seasonal flu shot already..... but I was very sick with high temps for days and body aches and pains.....  after about a week or so of that  I thought I was getting better and then the next day I relapes and started throwing up about every hour and was really out of it.... could stay awake or anything...... When I had the flu I skipping D and didn't go for 6 days cause I felt too sick to go...... I kept getting sicker.... yet my temp was now normal.... so my family rushed me to the doctors office and then took blood work and then off to the hospital I went.......  my daughter ( who is 24 and my sweet baby of the family was crying alot......)  they said that my potassium was dangerously high and all of the toxins from not going to D was affecting my body.....  they put me on D for three days straight and I am much better....its like the sucked the sickness right out of me......  amazing...... I did not know that not doing D would affect me that way....... that fast.......    I never want to feel like that again and I will never miss D again ...... Never......  scary for me and mostly for my family.......    I am sorry........
this D stuff is very real..... and should not be messed with..........  I have learned a lesson in life.......

Oh, Kathy,
I've been thinking of you, but thought you were on a trip.

Should have contacted you...

My SIL tried going for a 3 day weekend without D when my niece got married and was soooo sick.

Be careful! Glad you are on the mend.

Oh wow - yes, we were all thinking of you wondering where you were.  What a fright.  Good to know about not missing dialysis - we all wonder don't we?
Lovely to have you back.  Keep resting and look after yourself.

Oh, that sounds terrible!  My clinic has a special room for people that are possibly sick with the flu.  I hope that you feel better very soon.

That is one scary story. Very important that it was told, though. Good luck.

There is a reason we do dialysis 3 times a week - because if you leave it too long between sessions the toxins DO build up and as you've seen makes you much sicker. I've never missed a session and wouldn't contemplate it. Indeed if I was feeling sick the best place to be would be at the dialysis unit as they could get me checked out if need be. We've always been told "if you feel sick you still need to go to dialysis" - you can't really pull a sickie at dialysis!
