Have you had Peritonitis ?

I want to ask a few questions please ..
1) I know you can check if your pd fluid is cloudy , but im NO longer on pd
2) What symptoms did you get ? and how long did they take to develope?
3) What tests do they do to confirm Peritonitis ?
4) What was your treatment?
5) Did you have to stay in hospital? and for how long ?
6) How long did it last for ?

2) Excruciating pain, vomitting, I don't know at what point I was infected, if I was infected the night before then I would say a few hours, because it was around 1pm the next day when I felt the symptoms.
3) They test the PD fluid (if you are on PD) they also do blood culture tests to make sure it didn't enter the bloodstream. After the pd cath was removed and I no longer did PD, they did CAT scans to see if there was any fluid or inflammation in the peritoneal cavity.
4) Gentamycin in the PD bags and miropenem IV antibiotic. Flagyl and ciprofloxacin by mouth
5) Hospital stay was about 1 month but thats because I got a c-diff infection as well due to the broad spectrum antibiotics
6) couple of weeks till the pain was completely gone, 1 month till the white blood cell count was normal and fever spikes stopped

Thanks for that , but it does sound a bit more than Peritonitis , poor you !  Feel a bit easier now , ive just had an bad upset stomach today with bad stomach ache , but no throwing up ! Anyway at the unit tomorrow so will get checked out .

Had it in November 2008.  I had been feeling "not quite right" for a few days.  My first real clue was this ugly pale pink bunch of "stuff" in my drain bag.  I went to the ship's doctor and was given an IV antibiotic.  I then spent 10 days in Hilo Medical Center, where they did blood tests and operated on me for a ruptured abdominal hernia.  The discomfort I felt was similar to gas, so I kept asking for simethicone, no vomiting, no excruciating pain.  When I returned to the mainland they removed my PD catheter and I was on hemo for 6 months.

Yeah the problem i have is i no longer do pd but still have my catheter in . Ive just got like a griping pain in my stomach that comes on really strong then eases off altogether. No vomiting or anything else , but i did have a bad upset stomach yesterday , so wonder if its a spot of food poisoning ? Anyway at hemo today so will see what they say. If all goes quiet from me , you can guess where i will be !

THis is intresting...At my clinic and my experience.
2) I had very low blood pressure, really, really bad stomach pain, fever, as well as cloudy bag
3)As for as I know they test a sample of your PD bag to see how many organisms are in it
4)vancomycin
5) No i never had to stay in the hospital. I was really surprised when i was in hemo (after my hernia surgery) to know people had to stay in the hospital.
I had to go to the dialysis clinic almost daily to get vancomycin in the PD bags
6)The pain was pretty much gone after the first dose of antibotics. The symptoms can actually come and go, onmce i had the pain, then i had a fever, that went away, then later I had a bit of cloudiness in the bag

Yuck!  I haven't started dialysis yet but when I do, it will be PD.  Just reading this thread makes me feel like vomiting!!

Pd is very easy on the body.

it is rare to get peritonitis if you follow the rules you are taught. But even following all rules and instructions 100% cant guarantee you wont catch a virus.
Clean hands and making sure not to contaminate the connections when connecting the bags and to your self goes a long way in preventing the nasty bugs. (knock wood).

Kickstart you still have your Cath in.  Are you going to be able to come back to doing PD?  Hope so.

Kickstart, All of the above symptoms are conducive with peritonitis. It would be a good idea if they took your tube out, it is long overdue. They normal do a culture on your PD bag, how you will go on I don't know. There are many tests they can do. I only hope you have not got peritonitis. Let us know.

Kickstart, I've had that kind of pain with the milder peritonitis I've had. I tend to get that pain when some part of my intestines (I figure usually some part of my colon) is "active" - moving something around, contracting, spasming, whatever. With worse peritonitis, I had diffuse pain all over my abdominal area.
