I hear these terms a lot in the posts I have been reading through.  What do these terms mean.

Crashed: During Hemodialysis your blood pressure can drop severely.   That awful moment when the blood pressure drops and the eyes roll back in a dead faint. I do not know if it happens during PD.

What is an infiltration?
An infiltration (blow) means that the needle has been dislodged from inside the vein (fistula) or graft during needle insertion or during a dialysis treatment.
What can happen when an infiltration occurs?
When you have an infiltration, blood leaks outside of the fistula or graft into the surrounding tissues. This causes swelling and pain in the area.
Your fistula or graft will continue to function. It may become bruised, swollen and the area may feel firm to touch.

crashing is when they remove too much fluid from your system. it can cause cramping or your blood pressure might drop to low, which may cause you to get dizzy and pass out or throw up.

infiltrated is when sticking you they go through the vein not just into it.

Crashing is as others say and you dont crash on PD its far gentler on your system. Infiltration is when instead of going into the fistula and straight , they go in one side and the needle comes out the other (like puncturing it if you will) but one nurse told me it actually helps make the fistula stronger, now im not sure how or if its true.

Crashing, as it happens on hemodialysis, doesn't happen on PD as far as I've heard, but you can still take off too much fluid with PD and end up with low blood pressure. It happens much more slowly than hemo, so you don't suddenly crash.

I was infiltrated for the first time last week...what a mess!  I still have some function and my kt/v is 2.8+ so they let me skip that day because they couldn't restick me...I had a huge hematoma (sp) and now have a nice bruise, but it's back to business as usual.

What they said. =D My fistula has infiltrated many times. And if it infiltrates too bad, I think it can ruin the fistula. It's so painfull, I don't wish that on anyone!! You gotta ice and heat it for a while after it infiltrates. So yeah...

Thanks for the explanation,
I was wondering about it as well.
Thanks again, Kristina.
