Paying the price

Well i got my wish today , i got put into that side room  not without paying the price though ! I walked onto the unit and went to the board where our bed numbers are written up and yay im in the side room ! As i walked towards it one of the women shouted me over and said 'have you read that board outside where we get weighed?' so i replied 'what the one about high phosphorus?' 'Yes 'she replied .'.thats whats wrong with your eyes !' I soon put her straight on that one , im having my eyes swabbed today for infection etc. Nice to know they have obviously been talking about me behind my back eh ! One of the male indian nurses put me on today, he was fine with me, but not one of the female nurses spoke to me or came near me, neither did they ask me how i felt when i came off. So sod em ! , give me attitude and i will give it you back , be civil to me and i will be civil back . So now theres a lovely atmosphere , bloody marvellous ! By the way ..my head was fantastic today , not even a glimmer of a headache !!! If this is the price i have to pay , then its bloody well worth it !

Do you mean the patients were talking about your care with the staff?  If so that's shocking!

You are not in physical pain anymore and that is great!  I think that people should be treated as human beings and if the staff is that sophomoric and won't talk to you I am worried that it will eventually take a toll on your soul.  You hang in there 1 battle at a time and it looks like you have one a big one by getting the room.  I am happy for you.

Maybe they were talking about you or maybe she was near you when you had been discussing the problems when you had sessions in the main area (under the lights!!) and she overheard you. In our unit it's often common to hear all kinds of things - even things we don't WANT to hear!!! I often get medical students who are examined taking history and they use me as a guinea pig - because I am about the only one in dialysis who can speak English clearly(and understand it) and lucid. Well so I am going through the whole history thing and well aware everyone can hear what I am saying. I don't really care, but it may just be that this woman who talked to you overheard what you said and decided to make her own mind up about things. I think it was rude for her to make an assumption and go to you and tell you like that - that seems a bit wrong, but some people are like that. Maybe she was jealous you got in the little room?? Who knows.

Anyway I wouldn't just assume that the staff have been talking to patients about you behind your back. That's very unethical and I know just the other day in our unit a guy who was sitting near me asked about another patient he had seen a few weeks ago and how he was.. the staff were VERY reluctant to discuss it for that very reason (it turns out that patient passed away ) but there's clearly a strong ethical requirement to respect people's privacy in that respect and not discuss their cases with other patients. Always when a nurse I am friendly with talks about other situasions she is very generalised about it and doesn't say "oh Bob Smith has this problem..." or anything like that.

It's a bit difficult specially in something like dialysis - I have been going over 3 years now and you see the same people week in/week out... and if they're not there - staff or patient - you get curious and ask(and hope it's something like they're on a holiday!)... and so sometimes we are told if they know that we know eachother.

RichardM , to be honest im not really bothered ! If they want to gossip let 'em get on with it. The only time i would be concerned if it was something i'd said in confidence to one of the staff and it was gossiped about. The only thing that annoyed me was that she presumed she knew what was wrong with me and could have said was i aware that high phos had similar symptoms and not ..thats whats wrong with you ! Anyway while they are talking about me , they are leaving someone else alone !

A bed,you have a bed and not a stupid hard uncomfortable recliner chair? Oh my God,to be able to do the 3.5 in a bed. At least my butt wouldn't hurt .

Well they are not beds as such ! but very high tech ! Its like a bed but you can raise the back or leg section , you can higher or lower the bed , it stops just short of being to either lie down or sit completely upright , we have a remote that allows you to adjust it as you want .
