just back from the hospital today

i went to the hospital thursday morning to get my leg treated for a small infection and almost lost my kidney. i`ve had a small rejection problem going on for a year, so small they only noticed it in april. i was being treated for the rejection with IVIG infusions. i went to the hospital on thursday for my leg, winded up getting a kidney biopsy, lost 5 units of blood, for which i had to get transfused, which i thought was bad because of antibodies. my creat went up to 6.something not to mention my stomach being extended because the blood had to go somewhwere. they also gave me antibodics that i was allergic to. i was fit to be tied. the final outcome is leg is better, no signs of kidney rejection, creat is 2.4 and dropping. question is, i don`t know how to feel, mad because the hospital and renal docs screwed up so bad they damn near did me in, or happy that they turned everything aronnd and saved me and my kidney?

Oh oswald, good Lord, I'm happy to read that you are better but mad as hell that you had to go through all that. Take care and keep us posted.

That's awful! And scary too. Was it your transplant surgeon that did the biopsy? I won't let anyone else touch Jenna. I figure he's got a vested interest in caring for her kidney.
I am sorry oswald, poor guy. I hope you're feeling better soon. Did they manage to treat your leg while you were there?

no the doc for my leg was an er doc. while i was there a member of my renal team took the opportunity to take blood test to check out my kidney numbers. my creat. was up due to the IVIG treatments. they said the sugar in the IVIG was damaging and possibly killed my kidney and told me that i might be back on dialysis this week. thats when they did an emergency biopsy. they took two pieces of kidney out. the bleeding did not stop. the pain in my stomach was overwhelming so they did a cat scan "with dye" and found out my kidney did not stop bleeding. by the way the surgeon that did my transplant, dr. robert montgomery of world famous john hopkins
said that the IVIG was ok to do. the er doc that treated my leg was great and did a great job.

I'd be pissed! Bet they won't talk you into another biopsy!
So sorry this happened, but glad you are home and doing okay.

what else can you do? if your trusted renal docs
say that your kidney is rejecting and you need a biopsy. i`ve been dealing with the same drs for almost 20 yrs. this is the first time i think they really screwed up.

I don't know what to say. I just hope they didn't screw up anything permanently.

When they really screw up like that you should not see a bill. I know you trust them and you feel that they probably feel bad. But, look at the hell you went through. I don't mind paying for good care! I do mind paying for botch-up jobs.

I think you should feel both ways. But then what are you going to do in an emergency situation?

Thank goodness you are back and better but whatever trust you had in the medical profession must be well shaken. The positive side is at least it had a good ending and you're back with us
