I am very new to the world of kidney failure.  I am 51 years old and was diagnosed in August with a kidney function of 18.  I held at 18 until this month and my function has now dropped to 14.  I am scheduled for fistula surgery in 10 days.  We're hoping and praying that I can stay off of dialysis until my fistula cures.

:waving; pklipe57.

it is scary to find this information out.

But this place can truly put you at peace of mind.  it has for me at least.
I didnt know anything about D, and know i can tell my neph what i want to do and i feel very preprared to stand up for myself.  Where as before i was just doing what my neph said i should.
If time is an issue have you thought or heard of PD?
I thought i had to be incenter three days a week.
IHD has shown me options i never knew existed.
My Neph seemed impressed in what i had learned in a short time.
(still have alot to learn) but i know i can get answers here :2thumbsup;

Welcome and good luck with your fistula surgery.  It's nothing, really.

And it is very possible for you to hold off on dialysis until your fistula has matured.  I held at a GFR of 14 for a long time.  Heck, I was as low as 7 (at the time of transplant) and never started dialysis (everyone is different, I know).  Take a pillow for your arm on the ride home and enjoy your down time.

You have found a soft place to land on IHD.  I look forward to hearing more from you and about you.    :waving;

Welcome to our community!  So glad that you found us and at what I consider a good time - just before you start dialysis.  I found this site just before I started and it was a great weapon in my dealing with this renal challenge.  This is a wonderfully caring and sharing group.  We are more than a website: we are a genuine family  :grouphug; and we are happy to have you with us.  Here is the place for information, support and for fun as well.
So keep reading and keep posting.  Let us know how you are doing.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Welcome 57 and good for you getting the fistula put in early. Hopefully it will indeed get to mature before needed!
