Did meat make you throw up pre-dialysis?

I was actually hungry this evening, so I decided I'd cook dinner for my husband and myself. As soon as I threw the steak on the Foreman grill, the smell made me physically ill! I felt like throwing up! The only meat I've eaten for almost 2 months now has been turkey and seafood, so I haven't had to smell red meat in a long time. I tried searching IHD about this, but all I could come up with is that people just don't want to eat it, or it tastes funny. Has the smell of meat made anyone else, who is or was pre-dialysis, nauseous? I still can't bring myself to eat anything tonight.

I could not eat beef for a few years before dialysis. Never connected it to this though. It would upset my system.

I agree with Boxman.......predialysis the sight and smell made me very ill...now I go for days without beef, sometimes any meat and then I want a big old juicy hamberger, then it's over for awhile.

I was the same way. Even post transplant when my iron was low and they were encouraging red meat, I had a hard time.

Same here with meat and protein in general. Pre-dialysis you should be eating very little protein anyway since the body can't handle the waste product from it. 3 0z a day was my limit at that time. Speak to a renal dietician if you can because what you eat and how much of it is important at this stage.

Me, too. Now along with not wanting beef, I don't like the smell or taste of chicken either. Makes me sick. It helps to know this is common with so many. My family keeps telling me to eat more meat. I just end up

I'm ok with cooked chicken right now, but raw makes me ill too. It never used to be a problem. Makes cooking dinner adventurous to say the least! I don't have any problem with deli turkey for my sandwich, which is good, because otherwise I wouldn't be getting any protein.

You could consider a protein powder or renal friendly protein drink until you start dialysis.

I am a carb girl these days. Protein just makes me sick. I don't eat barbeques, just have pasta when everyone has meat. Best way to keep nausea at bay.

I never even thought of that. Thanks! Hmmm...I wonder if they have vanilla flavored?

Ask a renal dietician to recommend protein drinks that are renally friendly. I was given Suplena and a specific renal formulation of Boost. Always check the potassium and the phosphorus.
