Her royal highness Queen Ruth on her throne, RIP

« on: February 29, 2008, 02:09:52 AM »

I am a diabetic who is currently on hemo. I am getting my tankoff catheter placed next Wednesday, so PD is in my future.

My question is which diet sodas are ok for stage 5 kidney disease.

I was previously addicted to diet pepsi, but gave it up because I was told no colas.

I now drink diet root beer and diet ginger ale.  Are diet grape and/or diet orange ok? I have heard different answers by different people.

Thanks,
Mike  :usaflag;

This will give some information as to what is in what of Coca Cola products, all on one page.

http://www.thecoca-colacompany.com/mail/goodanswer/soft_drink_nutrition.pdf

What is in Pepsi products.  Have to click on each one (product info tab) though to find what is in it.

I saw a post on another site that said consuming one 12 oz diet coke exhibited characteristics that could be damaging to kidneys.  I'll try to find that post and get it over here.

Hey Mikey, check the ingredients in your root beer of choice carefully. Some have phosphoric acid (this is what you need to be careful of in colas), and some don't. Some also change depending on whether it's in a bottle, can, or from the fountain. When I was doing PD, I got addicted to ginger ale for awhile (regular, not diet, so it may be different), and noticed a drop in the amount of fluid I was getting pulled off with each treatment. Turns out ginger ale has a significant amount (for a drink) of sodium  :oops;.

Grape and orange are ok for the most part, but still check the labels. I was told that as long as it was fruit-flavored, it was ok, but out of curiosity, I checked Fanta Orange one day, and guess what?? Phosphoric acid. Fanta Grape is ok, though.

In general, just be vigilant about checking labels and be aware of the things you've gotta be careful of.

Hi Mike,

This doesn't really answer your question, but I thought this was interesting:

Most root beer doesn't have caffeine, but there are a few that do. Barq's and Rat Bastard are examples of root beer's that have caffeine. See Anthony's Root Beer Reviews --> http://rootbeerbarrel.com/ for a review of over 100 different kinds of root beer, including information about whether or not a particular root beer has caffeine.

1. Who makes diet grape soda, I'm all for that! :beer1;
2. When I read Barq's Rootbeer Ingredients, it said no caffeine, but I like A&W better.
3. Easier to find a soda/pop with potassium sorbate, phosphates, etc than it is o find one without any. My dialysis center told me that diet or reg 7UP or Sprite was best to drink if soda/pop was wanted. I got tired of that quickly though.

Wasn't the cola part suppose to have an effect also beside the other ingredients?

Looks like Diet Coke only has 18 mg of Phosphorus per 8 oz. --not too much, just take your binders and enjoy.

2. When I read Barq's Rootbeer Ingredients, it said no caffeine, but I like A&W better.

from Wikipedia (I know, it's not the perfect resource) " 'Barq's' was long the name of the company's signature product, now known as Barq's Famous Olde Tyme Root Beer, a brand of root beer notable for being the only major North American root beer to contain caffeine. It has been bottled since the start of the 20th century and is currently sold by The Coca-Cola Company."

Another website says:
Barq's with caffeine (approximately 23 mg per 12 oz. can)
Barq's without caffeine (Barq's is canned caffeine-free by Swire Coca-Cola in Salt Lake City, UT)

from http://thebarqsman.com/?p=43: As many people know the majority of the people in Utah are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. For the most part, the LDS population stay away from caffeinated beverages. In 2001 Coke issued a Barq’s Recall. The cans that said “No Caffeine” actually contained caffeine. I wonder how many people noticed?

Now day's if I have caffeine, I notice changes in how my body reacts. And all the really good coffee is caffeinated too! >:(
Here at the grocery store the cans are labeled No Caffeine. Pepsi has Dad's Rootbeer, but hard to find diet along with Hires Diet Rotbeer.
