Hi everyone. I am usually extremely careful with birth control and everything but last night I had unprotected sex with a guy I have known for almost 3 years now. I woke up early and called my pharmacy to get the Plan B pill and now my question is should I tell my nurse tonight at dialysis? I am embarassed about this and dont get me wrong- i dont think that this is a form of birth control so thats not my concern, i'm wondering if medications i'm on will have an effect on the pill or not? any help or suggestions appreciated~

I'm not an expert on birth control pills. (I've always used my personality for birth control). But I would think the primary concern would be the time span between taking the pill and dialysis. We have always been instructed to wait until after dialysis to take any meds because they could get filtered out.

You can take some comfort in the fact that fertility in women on dialysis is extremely low, so endstage renal disease is itself already a highly effective form of birth control, though not fool-proof.

I might mention it to my nurse just in case but ask her to respect my privacy about it. I had to get the morning after pill once while on dialysis (the condom broke! Grrr!) and I didn't have any problems from it. I was emotional for a few days, but that was it.

I have Alport's Syndrome. My kidneys failed when I was 14 and I was on PD for five years before receiving a kidney transplant from my mother. That kidney failed in 2004 and I've been back on PD ever since. I am undergoing treatment for my high antibodies at Cedars-Sinai medical center. I had a kidney transplant on June 10, 2008. My boyfriend was the donor.

Karen, I would ask the nurse, for sure.

I talked with the nurse and she decided that since nobody knows for sure if Plan B is dialyzed out or bo, that we will wait until tomorrow to have dialysis- better safe than sorry! I hope I never have this happen again- it was embarrassing and I was freaking out!~

You are hilarious Flip.  No wonder they treat you so well at your five star clinic.  You're the resident entertainer.  Thanks for all the funniness.

Good luck karen :) I am sure it will be all A-OK but it would be a concern for me about it being filtered out potentially. Glad they are working WITH YOU rather than against you to wait a day for dialysis to be more sure. Yay team!

(can I also say I'm envious you had sex??? is that allowed? lol :) )

 :rant; I hate to sound like a nagging mom - but here it goes!
You must be more careful! Unprotected sex is risky, and pregnancy is only one of the concerns!
Ok, I feel better.
Hope everything works out Karen.

I'm sorry you had to go through all of that.  You did the right thing by not hiding it from your dialysis nurse.

But the real question is - How was the sex?      :shy;     ;)

Just joshen.  You don't have to answer that!

Thanks everyone for the replies! I feel a lot better now about things. I was so mad at myself for putting myself and Brad at risk like that!  I am so careful with that stuff usually but I'm human and make mistakes. I'm surprised at the fact that there hasn't been any studies done to find out if the Plan B pill gets dialyzed out or not. It seems like something that people would want and need to know. Anyways all is OK now and I'm oiff to write up a take-home final, how fun! :sarcasm;
