Local Support Groups for CAPD/Transplant Patients in Atlanta?

Hi all,

I hope this isn't in the wrong section of the forum. 

I'm hoping to hook up with a face to face support group in the Atlanta metro area.  Does anyone know of any resources?  I'm in Gwinnett County, but would be willing to drive outside my county.

I don't have any info for you but I wish you luck finding a group. I tried really hard to find something similar here in our city for hemodialysis patients, but there was nothing within about 40 miles. After spending time at in-center hemo, they are even less likely to go attend a group meeting. More and more people are using online support groups.

dlady, I was looking for exactly that in the Cobb/Cherokee county area the whole time I was on PD. I finally gave up. As far as I can tell, there are no PD/dialysis support groups in Atlanta - which is another reason I love IHD so much! Though I absolutely understand your desire for face to face contact.

I think Piedmont hospital may have a support/information group for transplant patients and those on the waiting list. I seem to remember it meets the second Sunday of each month. I'll have to look for that information to be sure of the specifics, though. I'll let you know what I find.

Try the Emory Hospitals in Atlanta. There might be support groups there.

I just got the most recent newsletter from Piedmont, and it did not have the usual calendar in it. I also checked their website and couldn't find anything. Either they aren't having the meetings anymore or they're off for a couple of months. Sorry. Have you asked your PD nurse?

Oh yes.  She just gave me a blank look.  It's the strangest thing.  Seems like there are support groups for everything--except dialysis patients.  Maybe it's because we don't like having "one more thing" to do on top of everything else we have to do just to stay healthy.

On the other hand, if I will just participate online, I think I'll get almost as much as a face-to-face type of support.  It's the showing up and participating that's hard sometimes.

We are having get together in Chicago and Vegas this year.  See if you can make one of those.  Also depending on where you live there may be an IHD member you can get together with and talk.  There is also the telephone to use to call one of us when you need it. I am kitkatz2 on skype.

You could start a support group yourself.
