I can't type long as I'm about to fall asleep at the PC.
The past 24-36 hours have been horrible. They extubated my mom around 5:00 pm on Monday. I finally got to the hospital around 7:30 pm and I was shocked when I entered her room. She was laying there eyes wide open, mouth agape and a look of terror in her eyes. She could not speak and would not blink her eyes. I started to question her nurse and she thought that my mom was just suffering initially from the sedatives. My father and I started mentioning how worried we were and brought up the possibility of a stroke. The doctors were called in and they did a CT scan around midnight which was inconclusive. They did start a treatment with some blood thinners, but the dose had to remain very low because of her surgical wounds.
Tuesday morning brought no change in her condition. They performed an MRI and MRA which showed a brain stem stroke caused by a blockage! They don't have a prognosis as of yet, but I don't feel that there will be a good outcome. On top of all of this, she has started running a high fever Tuesday afternoon which raised the fear of a bad post-op infection in her abdomen.
I so wish there was something I could do for her. The look of fear in her eyes is almost unbearable. I've read a few posts online from some brain stem stroke survivors and their stories can be frightening. A bunch of them experience a "locked in" feeling where to themselves they appear OK, but can't respond to the world around them. One survivor put it this way - "the pathway between my brain and the outside of my body broke". Please pray for my mom!
Anyone know of any good stroke message boards?

I'm so sorry to hear this. It is very difficult to predict how any stroke patient will do, some will recover function, especially when treated early.
Thinking about your mom and your family,
