Must They Keep The Place So Cold?

In dialysis, I am freezing to death, they have the place so damn cold. I have a blanket and even a heating pad and I am still freezing. When I leave dialysis I am totally drained and weak. No one seems to be too  concerned that I am freezing. What can I do? It is very, very frustrating.

Have you asked to increase the temperature on the machine? It’s usually standard on 36’. 37,5’ is better for me anyway.

Hello coldhoist, I am so sorry about your terribly frustrating experiences during dialysis-treatments. Did the nurses give you an explanation why the dialysis-centre needs to be so cold? What is the explanation of the doctors? Is there another dialysis-centre in your area where you might have better luck?

I do remember when in the past some dialysis-patients on IHD complained about the same problem, and, if I remember well, it seemed to help, if they dressed "onion-like" with plenty of different layers of clothes beforehand (also one of Sir Ernest Shackleton's advices for Antarctica)... and at the dialysis-centre it also helps to try and move some limbs now and again. To enjoy a drink of hot coffee/chocolate at the centre (prepared at home and transported in a thermos-flask) might help to warm-up a little as well... Are you on the kidney-transplant-waiting-list?

P.S. You may also feel drained and weak because of the fact that no one seems to be bothered about your freezing during dialysis-treatments and this frustration might also be further "assisted" by the fact that right now your body does need regular dialysis-treatments ... and, for example, it took me also a few months to come to terms with accepting my dialysis-dependence ...

... I do understand that it can be very hard in the beginning to accept the need of dialysis-treatments, but please make it as easy as you can for your mind and your body and please make sure to keep your mind occupied at all times through the dialysis-time by watching an interesting film/YouTube-movie on the computer and/or reading a book/magazine and/or trying to solve some crossword-puzzles and/or by listening to your favourite music ... and ...  I have been doing dialysis for five years and for the last four years I have complained about the cold. They say they have to keep the place cold to cut down on diseases.  The cold air kills my body. I tried working puzzles at dialysis but it is hard to concentrate when you body is in pain. I also have my tablet with me so i can watch YouTube but it is hard to watch anything when your body is in pain. I was in dialysis once in the hospital and my heart stopped. Dialysis is doing a job on my body. It feels like I am being strained to the limit. I had spinal surgery four years ago and after that dialysis became a nightmare with the pain in my back, knees and thighs. I hate going to dialysis more than anything I have ever done. I dread it.

Hello coldhoist, I do apologize for either forgetting or not knowing that you have been "on it" for the past five years already. I also feel  very sorry that you had to undergo spinal surgery four years ago and that dialysis has become very difficult for you with all the pain in your back, knees and thighs. I do hope your doctors/specialists can help and assist you most urgently and you certainly have all my sympathy and I do hope some members can give you some practical ideas as well for a positive way forward.
But most of all I do hope very much that your doctors/specialists can help you very urgently.
