Had a traveller from Toronto who occupied the seat next to mine when i asked him how our dialysis unit compared he says he does his dialysis at home so a said is that what they call perotoneal dialysis?  no he said i have Fresnius machine just like the one you are hooked up to,he went on to say government healthcare covers the cost, wow maybe i should move from Quebec to Ontario.

Hi Jambo101, I don’t know how it works in Canada, but have you written to your Medical Director in the hosp? Your Healthcare provider councillor?  About Home Hemo yet?

Health care in Canada is supposed to be universal, but it really isn't.  If you live in a smaller place, you are not going to get the same services as you would in a larger place.  So, if you live in a rural area, or if you live in a small province like I do, not all modalities are offered.  We didn't even have a nephrologist in this province until 2009.  Before that, every 3 months we had to travel 4 hours to a different province, for a 15-20 minute appointment.  I imagine that there were a few who didn't go because they couldn't afford the trip.  That was considered non-compliance.

As it stands now, PEI has 2 nephrologists, a renal clinic, and 4 dialysis units.  Mine is the largest, and is the only one with evening shifts, and I nagged for those for 2 years.  The PD program is getting larger, and I'm told that there are 20 patients on home dialysis and around 100 on in-center hemo.  Home hemo is not offered, and I don't see it happening anytime soon.
