Hi all,
Started my HD training last week. Just completed my 3rd session.
Just have a quick question about canula placement
I have had a wrist radio-celaphic AV for about 8 months. Docs and nurses all say is OK.
The nurses are placing canulas about 3mm (1/8") apart at each different session
After the 3rd session I have noticed both the A and V entry sites are now forming a lump and is hard
Is this hardening normal the more you needle and move the needles along the vein?
Cheers

I'm not sure. I'd have to see it and feel it. But, I'd bring it to their attention. Make sure it is the nurse and not the tech.
Best of luck and let us know what you find out.

My fistula is in my bicep. Total length is almost 6 inches but the center third is not developed well enough but the upper and lower thirds are fine and flow well enough we have been using it for about a year already.
They space the sticks about a half inch from the last session.
I am wondering if in your case the 'overlap' that area within the access where the needle resides of the repeated use may be causing some swelling of the interior wall of the vessel. Thus what can appear to be a hard knot forming. If this is what is happening it should heall and resolve if that section is not used again for a number of days.
If your access is not long enough to space the sticks farther apart I am out of ideas other than to make a visit to your vascular surgeon and ask more questions.

Hi again,
Nurse not sure why it is swelling.
It settles a little in between sessions. No pain but makes it difficult to feel vein beneath it.
Will have to see how it progresses
Cheers
