I will be installing an update to the SMF forums sometime in the next week.    I expect the forum will be down for less than an hour.

This is an update from 2.0.14 to 2.0.15, and contains various fixes including a security patch.   Users should not notice any difference except when the forum is down for update.

I will be cloning the database and software before the backup, just in case.    It's far better to do keep up2date on these fixes than try to apply a few years worth at once.

And time for a reminder - I am the person to contact if the forum is broke, but I have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with moderation, post removal/editing, telling members what is acceptable or not, etc.  The only reason I am listed as an "admin" by my avatar is that I need that privilege to apply updates.

Many Thanks Simon!

I for one would be lost as I am but a lowly 'user'.

I quit programming after mastering basic long ago when the Apple was first invented.

The update was trivial.  I spent more time backing up a checkpoint of the software and database than doing the actual update.

Backing up may be "trivial," but it sure ain't trivial when your site crashes and you haven't done it.

According to Murphy, the chances of things going wrong during an upgrade increase dramatically if a backup is unavailable.
