I've been skidding down the eGFR road from 40 at my Nephrectomy in 2010, to  37 in 2012 to now 29 in Feb 2015.   

Just last June i was at 32…so a 3 pt loss in 7 months.

I asked for another renal panel an in  april  the test showed a drop of 3 MORE points to 26, and 2 UP in creatinine.

 A 3rd May renal test came back  yesterday with the SAME eGFR and creatine as February I was thrilled. I am back up to 29 and  down to 1.74..  now at top of Stage 4 but I'll accept that happily.

Maybe NOTHING I did by diet or reduced meds helped, or maybe EVERYTHING I did, all together, plus positive metal outlook helped.

Hello MuddyGurl,
I have noticed that at first it becomes very difficult to figure out which food suits our body best in ESRF,
but it certainly becomes almost too difficult to figure out what is best, if too many different foods are tried out at the same time...
What worked for me to keep my "two little fighters" functioning for as long as is possible, was to try out one different vegetable/fruit -
- one after the other -  to give each vegetable/fruit at least two weeks to show its "performance",
and to figure out - by confirming blood-tests - how which vegetariable/fruit  "works"
and whether or not one particular vegetable/fruit could be beneficial - or not - ...
All this was at the time very expensive, because I only was able to have these special blood-tests done privately
and I had to pay for every other other new blood-test every two weeks... but it was certainly worth the effort !
...The most important point in this exercise was for me, that it enabled me to keep my "two little fighters" as calm as possible
without any unnecessary aggravation...
...And I also felt that by keeping my "two little fighters" so calm at all times, gave them much more strenghts
to keep up their little function for much longer ...
... Having finally started with dialysis in December 2014, I still keep the same vegetarian diet
and my "two little fighters" still serve me very well every day ...

I spent over 8 years in Stage 4/5 during which I got regular labs.  My creatinine and egfr would often jump up a little and down a little.  The trick is to look at trends rather than at photographic results.  Your labs will tell you what is going on at that particular moment your blood is drawn; it is a snapshot, so to speak.

Keep in mind that it is also important to look at other numbers like BUN and phos/potassium.  Those numbers along with creatinine and egfr will give you a better idea of your overall renal deficiency.

Once your egfr dips below 20, it's time to start thinking about renal replacement therapy in whichever form you deem best for you.

HI Kristina, I take encouragement from your long term veggie diet…all I read tells me to ignore the modern  dismissal of lower protein ( docs OKing 70+ gr).
Also when all I see is a long term slide with nothing UP in between i can only take action, doing nothing and waiting to see might mean I lose more nephrons.

I read Dr. Walser's book, talked to this chemist who developed the amino acids, and in just 30 days of a no meat diet I am satisfied that plant based protein is he way to go..I need think of myself as a vegetarian, funny, i DO love my high fat diet, and the satiety of that along with all the science backing up good dietary fats makes me keep on a LCHF path.

I've been reading it will take a decade to finally get the party line of high crabs to change and both cancer and obesity/diabetes epidemic will do it, where just dieting ail not.

as far as which veggies…. I am not eliminating any I eat all 15 of the Davita list. My diet started at LCHF..and I continue it just with no meat pretein.

My biggest aid to my body besides removing the stress of oxidative meat waste, was to drop 2 meds, reduse  325aspirin to a baby one, reduce pain meds further.

I have slowly added ALA chromium and a few others to my diet, as well as Mg to support all functions.

right  now I asked to see the doc because my BP is not under control with meds..it keeps popping to 140-136-even 150…it HAS to be under 130 minimum.   change of meds maybe.

I trusted the VA too long…even giving me a fULL 325 aspirin a day, after my stroke, for the past 2 years is a travesty..research show ONLY 75 mg ( or  81baby aspirin is ENOUGH)   I should have known to research it myself!

..so I get pissed over these "little slips" that cost me renal function. I could keep complaining over these injustices but it just raises BP..dont need that.

Thanks for your very kind thoughts and please ask your dietician and your nephrologist what they think about your diet-plans...
... My own veggie-diet served me very well for over 43 years but it could well be that my diet worked so well
because it helped to assist dramatically to slow down "my" specific kidney disease which is Chronic Proliferative Glomerulonephritis...
Please ask many doctors/nephrologists/dieticians about diets to slow down a deterioration in kidney-function
and please check-up rigorously on the Internet about the very latest findings by medical researchers
what to eat in order to slow down a deterioration of kidney function in your particular kidney disease.
I wish you good luck and may your kidney function last you for a long time to come!

Thanks Rerun..this is how I look at it. I have no 'looking thru the world in rose colored lenses" that I can 'fix' anything on my kidney, I only wish to support my body as it does it own repairs.

I wanted to get a special test the VA can't offer….I can't find a lab here to draw blood....there is an online lab service,  BUT there is NO LAB  to go to in my town, only one 100+miles away…It's a 3 hour  windy dangerous mountain road to a lab in another small town.

What I learned going thru kidney cancer and Nephrectomy  taught me  NOT TO HAVE FEAR..my body knows what it is doing, both with the cancer tumor ( a protection not a danger) and now with failing function I KNOW that losing weight, dropping harmfulmeds and foods can ply relieve the burden the kidney is under.

therefore any thing I do will be only a positive.  SInce I am against the triple whammy of Docs do not believe food is medicine. 2. There are no safe drugs yet.
3. Neph/Uro/RDN advice is all based on old school high carb diets which are dispoven as helpful, and may HARM me further.

So I am on my own, or in finding likeminded, experienced CKD patients to share info with.  Even MDS are guessing based on education/experience how to tray you…my guesses may be as valid, or better, than theirs.

Looking at the DRUGS under clinical trials on humans I see MORE problems with them..no wonder  Hippocrates said "Let thy medicine be thy food"

FOOD is safer!
