High Phosphate

I asked the nurse today why she thought that Alan's eyes had been so red...I mean really red bloodshot, very noticeable...she didn't know...
After having a bit of a search, I find it may be his high phosphate levels, can anyone relate to this? I know his phosphate was a bit high....

Could very well be. You might also ask if Alan's eyes are burning, cos they might be dry.
Good luck to both, Cas

No, I've not heard of high Phosphorus related to red eyes. Maybe he has been crying. Now that makes more sense.

They are not burning, nor crying.
I found this...
Deck the halls with boughs of holly…plus foods low in phosphorus, will power and phosphorus binders! During the holidays, following a low phosphorus diet is more of a challenge for chronic kidney disease and dialysis patients because there are so many high phosphorus temptations. Elevated phosphorus levels cause itching, sores,
red eyes
, calcifications and contribute to bone and heart problems. - See more at:

Well.... I'll be. I've never been told that by the famous 6 year degreed Dietitians. NOR my Eye doctor who I just told that my EYES were red a lot and he gave me a name for some eye drops.
Thank you. I learn something from this site all the time.

A high CPK level (creatine phosphokinase)
can also cause bloodshot eyes -or in my case many years ago, blood vessels in my eyes to burst, making the eyes appear as if they are about to drip blood. Other symptoms of a high CPK level include muscle aches and inflammation. People with myositis or Lupus sometimes have high CPK levels. In my case, it was Polymyositis. Maybe your husband has some sort of inflammation going on in his body, perhaps in the cells or walls of muscles somewhere. Inflammation is not always visible to the naked eye (such as signs of swelling or redness) but a blood test can confirm a high CPK level. Maybe his body is just reacting and trying to get use to dialysis. Or he has allergies to something outdoors or even indoors at the clinic. Hope you get to the bottom of it and that he finds some relief.

Husband had ESRD with Type I Diabetes -Insulin Dependent.
I was his care-partner for home hemodialysis using Nxstage December 2013-July 2016.
He went back to doing in-center July 2016.
After more than 150 days of being hospitalized with complications from Diabetes, my beloved husband's heart stopped and he passed away 06-08-21. He was only 63.

The red eyes are not bothering him so I don't think its a reaction....they just look very noticeable .... awful in fact, but as he can't see them, he's not bothered.
He is vomiting a bit though...I don't suppose that helps.

Diabetic Wife has eye 'bleeds' inside, clouds her vision. Increased ocular pressure, uses special eye-drops to reduce the pressure. I don't think they work so well. Sometimes one, or both her eyes appear bloodshot.
I nag at her that she isn't checking her blood sugar often enough, that those periods of high sugars greatly contribute to the bleeds.
Also wish this state had medicinal use laws, I'd grow some green again, and dose her regular. I used to myself, but been clean since Sept 81. Anyway, those coughing fit induced by smoking whould momentarily raise blood pressure spikes high enough to burst blood vessels in the eyes. Perhaps your husbands vomiting is doing something similar. spiking BP during the contractions, causing bleeds. You will have to note his eye condition throughout the day/night, and again within minutes of an episode to see if there is a reaction.
If you notice a parallel then talk to his Dr's to find out what can be done to help solve this.

Charlie you could always bake "green" cookies
I find doctors are not as interested in finding whats the cause of things...just masking it!!
I mentioned the high phosphate-red eye link to another nurse at clinic and she said in a surprised voice that she had never heard of it...I guess
they just go in and go about their work hooking people up but not treating them so it doesn't matter to them ?

The only time I had problems with my eyes was when my last transplant was failing and I got a lot of fluid retention (prior to re-starting dialysis) and my eyeballs actually swelled and changed shape (they looked grotesque) and they were a bit red then too as well as puffy! Went away with diuretics!!
