Dialysis Dilemma

I'm currently on high dose peri-dialysis on a Baxter machine.  I do a daytime drain and fill, then ten hours that night.  I've lost 4 kilos due to a skin cancer surgery.  They took a huge hole out of the top of my head.  That's what I get for surfing 35 years.  That, and surfer's ear.  Then I got a bacterial infection in my right leg.  After two weeks of drugs, that's gone.  The surgery is still healing, and I have to get another surgery for my hand next week.  Anyways, my big problem is dry heaves.  I used to get at the end of my first cycle at night.  My stomach rejects food, water, and gives me dry heaves.  It's awful.   It lasts about half and hour, and I lose my breath.  At the end I'm exhausted, huffing and puffing.  Last night I drank some water near the end of my treatment because my legs were cramping.  Same thing.  I'm thinking of going back on hemp, but my fistula went bad in my arm.    The doctor said I'd have to get a new fistula in my leg.  I've noticed this is very painful in other patients, but I wouldn't mind 4 hours a day 3 times a week.  After all I've been doing 11 hours 7 days a week.  I'd like to get feedback from other patients that get fistulas in their legs.  How bad is it?  Does anyone know what to do for the dry heaves?  My doctors kind of ignore this when I tell them about it.

I'm so sorry to hear of your problems Whamo. I can't give you any advice I'm afraid. Although I remember reducing the amount of fluid when I couldn't eat or drink with PD.

Would compazine (sp) or one of the other anti-nausea drugs help?

Ask your Dr to prescribe a few, take immediately before treatment to see if any improvement.

Definitely ask for Zofran ODT. Specifically the ODT it dissolves on your tongue. I suspect your fills are too big for your body because you lost weight. Too much fill will press on your stomach and intestines and you'll throw up. Ask your nurse if you can try a smaller fill. She will need doctor approval but if she advocates for you you'll get it.

   I got some motion sickness medicine, but I haven't tried it yet.  My nurse suggested I use two yellow bags tonight instead of two greens.  She thinks I'm taking off so much fluid that I fill up too much.  Last night I did an early drain during my first dwell.  I just can't stand the pain anymore.  The rest of the night was relatively okay.  My wife just left to San Francisco for the weekend.  She just texted me from the airport. It's going to weird applying the dressing on the top of my head when I can't see it.  I plan to go by feel, soreness.  Getting a big hole in the top of your head is shocking.  They closed it up with 20 stitches, but it's very strange feeling.  It feels like getting a facelift.  I had problems last year with too much fluid, but that was because of constipation.  It's not a problem, now.  I want to thank everyone for their concern and suggestions.  I haven't felt depression on dialysis until now.  Yesterday I was actually thinking about going off treatment, and seeking hospice.   I've snapped out that, for now, but more pain is out of the question for me.

How about a catheter for hemo? It is not usually done long term but can be. It is simple to put in and use. It is painless. the only issue is inection risk. But it beats what you are going through.
