Disability

I'm currenty stage 4, with a GFR of 20. Is there a specific number my GFR needs to be in order to qualify for Disabilty benefits? Getting very difficult to keep working .

If you are still working at all you don't qualify for disability benefits unless you have disability through your job.  I worked for USDA which was a federal job.  So I had to apply for disability and they had to say "no" then I quit my job and my job gave me benefits for six months then I could apply for disability again.

The first question on the form is, Are you still working.... the answer has to be NO.

I'm thinking you really need to be on dialysis also.  Not just waiting for dialysis.

My neph suggested I go on disability when I started the process to qualify for transplant, when I was somewhere between 15 and 20% function. I'm at 9% now and still working. It is hard to work. I make a lot of mistakes, forget to do things, and am slower than I used to be. I'm always tired and I get frustrated easily. I don't want to go on disability because I think it would be harder to rejoin the work force after transplant. If I wasn't on the list, I think I'd go on disability. I dont think being on dialysis is a requirement for disability. Your doctor needs to provide justification and you might need to fight for it more though.

There's no GFR number for disability. It depends how you feel and if your doctor will sign the paper saying you're disabled.
