My brother is in the hospital waiting for open heart surgery tomorrow. He's really upset as he is very active and open heart surgery will quash most activity for about 6 weeks. I went to see him today and listened to him complain and debate whether to have the surgery (he needs it). So, finally, I said to him: "you'll be laid up about 6 weeks and then be more or less back to normal. In 6 months, you will be back to normal. Yet you're questioning whether to have life-saving bypass surgery since you feel good now You're not well and you need the surgery. If you're not certain, ask yourself if you want to trade places with me!" Well, he didn't think that would be a good trade as he knows I'm on hemodialysis 3x per week for the rest of my life unless I somehow get a transplant.
Thus, for the first time, I found a benefit of dialysis: it made my stubborn brother accept the fact he needs surgery.
