I was looking up chocolate on NutritionData.com and found something for my little chocolate fix I like sometimes.


Mexican Chocolate you can buy at most any grocery store is pretty low in in phosphorous and Potassium compared to all the other chocolates.   

Chocolate, Baking, Mexican 1oz 28g  (P 111 mg) (PH 39.8mg) Cal 119

It's a little sweet and has a little cinnamon in it.

See, I never quit eating chocolate - I needed it to stay sane.  I would suggest switching to darker chocolate and/or only buying really good, premium chocolate.  The richer, better flavor lets you get that chocolate taste satisfaction with less chocolate.

Besides, life is too short to eat cheap chocolate.  How that Zachary company has managed to stay in business is a total mystery to me!

Jbeany   I just looked this up for comparison

Dark Chocolate 70-85% cocao solids is:   1oz 28g Potassium 200mg, Phosphorous 86.2mg and calories 168

Since I don't have medical insurance yet I can't afford to be on phosphorous binders so I'm looking for the lower amount of phosphorous and potassium for those little pleasures.  I understand your thoughts on going for the better tasting but I hate feeling sick.   Actually i like the taste of the Mexican chocolate

The center or your doctor should give you samples of binders.  Ask your dietitian.  She will get you some. 

I've never quit chocolate.  I have a bag of those tiny kit kats.  Just 2 little pieces.  A DAY.   I can't keep M&M's around.  So I don't buy those.  I threw out a lot of candy from Christmas.  I did eat a little peanut brittle.

what about tums for binders, those are only $3.00 a bottle and I only have to buy it once every 1.5-2 months.

I'm not on dialysis yet, should be anytime now.  My GFR was 11 last time and I see my Neph on the 20th.  I will ask him about Tums.

As long as you stay away from milk chocolate and you don't eat a whole bar at a time, the potassium and phosphorus can be kept low enough. I tend to eat about an eighth of bar (less than half an ounce) of very dark chocolate at a time, every day or so. I don't have big cravings for chocolate. :waiting;

Didn't mean to imply that the Mexican chocolate was a bad idea at all!  If you like it, go with what works for you, of course.  I just found that for myself, I craved chocolate constantly and that my cravings were better satisfied with small amounts of really good chocolate.  It kept me from eating large amounts of less satisfying cheaper stuff.  It worked better for me to have a couple of bites of something that cost the earth than to go for half a bag of Hershey kisses - at least from a diet perspective.  Although being broke helped too - if I was only going to buy expensive chocolate, then I also had to make it last until I could afford more!

I never knew there was Mexican chocolate till I had some at the Godiva store. I didn't crave chocolate while on dialysis, but sure do now after my transplant.
 
Next year I should pay Rerun for her chocolate so it doesn't go to waste in the trash  ;D

I know this is old, but maybe you can make it with rice milk?  And add some non-dairy creamer to make it test a little creamier and thicker?. I added heavy whipping cream to something that I made with rice milk the other day, just a little bit.  I always have that and half and half because my husband is on Atkins so he can't have milk.  I also worst the occasional dark chocolate that, a small Sander's candy from a gift box.  Dark chocolate caramels with sea salt.  I got them forum husband, but didn't double check my order--he hates dark chocolate.  Now I have a box, and he does, of the milk chocolate version (for his diet days off).. Yum!  He also brought home Twix snack-sized ice cream bars, and I have them for a rare treat when I'm burnt out on Italian Ices.
