Recommended daily fluid intake?
«

My wife isn't on a fluid restriction..but that gives her the excuse to not monitor her fluid intake. She is pretty good with controlling it but when I see her always taking her max fluid off and puffing up on off days I just worry. So instead of asking the nurse and giving the nurse the idea TO put her on a fluid restriction (which she would absolutely hate and I don't blame her one bit) I figured we should try and get her to monitor it herself. Any idea folks? Thanks.

Is she still urinating? What's her weight? Fluid limits depend on those two for the most part. If she's not urinating, 32 oz a day is a good amount to hold her to, plus/minus a little if she's larger or smaller. If she is urinating, add the daily urine volume (either measured or estimated) to the daily fluid intake.
How much is she gaining between treatments?

Her dry weight is 81.1 kg and usually gains about 1.2 kg add a little or take a little off that number since it fluctuates so much. Her height is 5 foot 9 inches not sure if that makes a difference. As for urination that rarely occurs maybe once in awhile in the middle of the night and it is only a few drops.

I use 48 ounces per day, but I'm a 185 lb. man. I drink 2-4 oz. per drink, and try to space them out through the day. It's easy to mess up if you eat foods with a lot of water in them, such as fruit, yogurt, etc. I got sick of crashing at the end of maximum withdrawals so I started watching my fluid intake more closely, and it's not as big a problem.

1.2 kg is the min the machine takes off without even setting an amount. if that's all she's gaining i wouldn't even worry. everyone is different. if she's crashing taking that amount off her dry weight is too low.

1.2 kg is quite low. I'm half her weight and I rarely gain less than that. What do you mean by "always taking her max fluid off"?
If she's puffing up on off days, maybe her estimated dry weight is set too high.
Edit: Oh! I see she's on home hemo 5 days a week. That's different, though 1.2 kgs a day still doesn't seem TOO bad, unless she's sensitive to it. Still her dry weight might be off if she's swelling. How's her protein/albumin? Is she on any medications that might cause swelling?

Wow! My MIL is 5' tall and 96 lbs. and we were told to give her 48 oz. of fluid per day. She's on HD 3x a week.

everyone is different. what is too much for one, is just right for another or not enough for someone else.
